the reviews are saying they are incredible....

they're handing out earplugs! and even the people wearing them are still covering their ears! :eek:

I find this thread very amusing. I knew Kev, Bilinda and Debbie when I was at college. One was a man hating lesbo, one was a junkie and one was a complete social cripple. None of them were a god, a genius or in any way out of the ordinary. In fact I seem to remember they all had severe personal hygiene issues.

Then they had a band practice, the guitars all distorted and the NME went weak at the knees. Suddenly Kevin Shields was "a genuis" despite his lyrics saying nothing about anything (except drugs) and the songs being VU / Mary Chain rip offs.

I admit Isnt Anything has its visceral moments...but come on...surely you dont believe the hype

The same can be said for any genius before he (or she) does something ingenious.

Einstein was a loser working in a patent office. Miles Davis was a middle class son of a dentist. So what? Geniuses are not born with glowing auras, floating 2 inches above the ground.

(In anticipation of the inevitable idiotic retort: NO, I'm not claiming MBV is on the same level as Einstein or Davis. They were used to illustrate a principle.)

I don't think anyone would offer up Debbie and Bilinda as geniuses, gods, etc. Especially if you look at their post MBV output (Snowpony could be the worst album ever in my collection). I think Shields himself said Debbie didn't even play much if at all on the albums. But I do think Shield's talent is the real deal. While Isn't Anything is indebted to the JAMC I think MBV took the sound in a different direction. Even at their nastiest I don't think JAMC ever captured the guitar ferocity on Isn't Anything. Neither bands were known for their lyrical capability though. When it comes to Loveless I do believe all the acclaim, praise and hype. When I heard it I knew it was something different and special. For me When You Sleep is the stand out track and it always makes it to my Desert Island compilations I make for the car.

Now I do take exception to the "I'm so artistic and pure I can't be bothered with real life, washing my socks or making another album" cult that has sprung up around Shields.

Glowing review of the current MBV gig in The Guardian today. Pretty much says its so loud you cant hear the vocals or the melodies - but, hey, its really LOUD. So loud its art. Like real art, not pretend art.

Sorry guys, but as much as I love Loveless, I going with Scouser on this loudness thing being ridiculous. Didn't Douglas Adams do an entire spoof of some intergalactic rock band playing so loud it shook a star system.

But Scous, the album the live shows are two separate animals. I am guessin what is pissing you off is ha folks so enamored with Loveless give these ear drum shattering gigs a free pass and heap the praise.
