Yeah, definitely not classic Bunnymen bass on that album, but I suspect his presence was part of why that album feels the way it does.

I think Mac had the songs written already and it was the 'shotgun-following along' routine which is why Les isn't in it anymore. Not that I think that's bad but maybe Les thought it would be more impromptu as it was in the beginning when they wrote songs based around a bass line.

Regarding "I'll Fly Tonight", the lyrics remind me a bit of "A Promise".

I'll Fly Tonight

Nothing's gonna be the same...

Nothing's ever gonna change...

Nothing's gonna be the same
Nothing's ever gonna change....

A Promise

You said something will change....

You said nothing will change....

It's exactly the same
You said it's always the same
But I'll make it change....

Maybe it should have been.

I remember when I first got E - it took a little getting into - first back and all that - but soon the underlying groove became massively apparent.

I prefer to think of it as "recurring themes."

Good point. I guess he only takes direct lyrics from his solo material that didn't quite work out.

Or re-addressing older lyrics to fit the situation of life. I think he's very clever that way.

Maybe he just can't be arsed thinking up new ones?
And you know that I'll pick up
