I think Evergreen is the best overall album since they reformed in 97. It's the one that I return to the most. Great finished songs. Best comeback album ever.

What I like so much about Evergreen is it has such an identifiable feel to it. Each track works well as a contributor to the total experience and sound. That's one reason why I think the production is so good; you don't get that kind of completeness by accident. It feels bittersweet but also resolute. Here again, the production exhibits a consistent vision.

Someone mentioned the group of tracks from Altamont onwards, and I agree those are great. The first half is good too, though. If you like those latter tracks, I don't see how you don't like the title track, for example.

As for 'I'll Fly Tonight', which everyone seems to hate, I think it is a cornerstone of the album's sound. If it were by itself in a vacuum, perhaps I would not care for it, but it absolutely works as part of the album. Exactly the same can be said for "I want to be there", which also has some great, great guitar in brilliant counterpoint with the lyrics, in classic bunnymen style.

Evergreen is all about the overall effect, and much less about individual tracks. It's this overall effect that I'm looking for when I find myself coming back to it.

Speaking of Evergreen, it looks like Frank Coleman, the first person to give the Bunnymen an official website home when Evergreen came out, just joined the forum.

As for 'I'll Fly Tonight', which everyone seems to hate, I think it is a cornerstone of the album's sound. If it were by itself in a vacuum, perhaps I would not care for it, but it absolutely works as part of the album. Exactly the same can be said for "I want to be there", which also has some great, great guitar in brilliant counterpoint with the lyrics, in classic bunnymen style.

I'll Fly Tonight is my favorite song on the album. Wojo is right about there being a little Electrafixion left in them. I can't think of a song that I dislike on the album. i miss the air of optimism around the 1997 reformation. They did put some pretty good photos in that album -- EATB superimposed on the side of the helicopter, Will's green eyes, and, I believe, the first album photo of Ian wearing jewelry (the ring).

For me, the best song on the album is "Forgiven." I won't list the songs I believe are the worst because your passion (Brian, Jack) for this album is awe inspiring and not [font=Georgia]DRIVEL[/font].

If I had to pick one song I don't like I guess it would be "Baseball Bill". I didn't care for the Electrafixion version either but the one on Evergreen is much better at least.

For me this was the last time the Bunnymen sounded like a whole band to me actually. When it came out it just seemed like the album I would expect from them. I remember saying to someone, "It's like they never went away". It was the logical step after the self-titled album, which I rank lower than Evergreen overall.

It's got a great trilogy of pop songs.
"Nothing Lasts Forever", which gave them their only Top Ten UK hit since the band reunited and the first one since Killing Moon 13 years prior. I suppose it is the Killing Moon of the reformed Bunnymen. It seems to show up in all live sets sets and gets included a lot in b-side acoustic versions and a few soundtracks.

"I Want To Be There (When You Come)", great guitar hook and catchy verses and refrain, made the top 30 in the UK.

"Don't Let It Get You Down", I know it's not a huge fav with some but I like it. It's got a great guitar riff and melody and it's fun to sing along with. Even old agnostic Mr. Brian can't resist singing along with the the God/Jesus outro which I'll admit at first bothered me when I heard it. I was afraid that Mac went born again or something on us. LOL

Is it true that Jimmy Page sent them a fax congratulating them when it came out? I thought I read that somewhere. As most of you know they used Michael Lee on drums from Page/Plant for the album and tour. I hope it's true mainly because before I found music and guitarists like the Bunnymen and Sergeant I was a huge Page/Zeppelin fan.

It has the distinction of being the only bunnymen tune to mention The Munsters, and on that merit alone deserves respect.

everyone hates that one??????????

it's another fave of mine. one of my friends did his own version of that in an electric version and it was really cool. because of that, i know that one could have been much better if it had been produced all 'electrified' up, but i still love it the way it is.

the first two aren't the best there is to offer, but believe it or not, Altamont is probably my least fave on the album!

i tend to like the slower tracks on that album the best. (oddly)

I dunno, I didn't think the bass was very heavy in the mix on the most of the songs on Evergreen. On a few. You could definitely hear his bass on Fools Like Us, a pretty underrated Bunnymen song, IMO.

Les wasn't real prominent on that album, no real distinct bass lines or anything, but I imagine they made that album like a band rather than Ian's songs with Will riding shotgun and then everyone else following along.
