David Gilmour - Live In Gdansk

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

David Gilmour - Live In Gdansk

Postby Scouser » Mon Sep 22, 2008 1:35 pm

Just listened to it all way through (I got the two cd plus dvd version) and all I can say is "wow" - its amazing. The orchestration (courtesy of the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra) really adds to the texture of the songs. Gilmour is in fine voice throughout and there is added poignancy as Rick Wright plays keyboards.

I havent watched the dvd yet.

I know its not exactly post punk but some things are timeless.
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

His guitar playing is one of the few outside of "alternative" music I can say I think just makes songs better. (Eddie VanHalen with Dimaond Dave being one of the few others - oh and Link Ray and Dick Dale.)

I've got the "Remember That Night" dvd which I've ripped the audio from and burnt to cd, so in light of this is Gdansk worth shelling out for?

Yes...for two reasons.

Firstly the orchestra (not present at the Albert Hall from which Remember That Night is taken) which really breathe new life into the songs.

Secondly the arrangements on the second disc (the PF material) are brilliant. Its the best version of High Hopes Ive heard plus you get Fat Old Sun done in a new way that really works.

The 2 disc version is a real bargain as you get the dvd of the show thrown in. Personally Id get both as the RAH gig had some great guest appearances (CS / Bowie) whereas Gdansk is more about the music / arrangements.

Lets face it, the guys just supremely gifted in the guitar and vocals dept and the On An Island album deserves a "proper" live cd. I applaud Gilmour for adding in the orchestra, I dont feel like I've shelled out twice for the same concert.

remember that night...

Pink Floyd star David Gilmour has performed one of the band's early songs in tribute to the group's keyboardist Richard Wright, who died last week.

The song was on Pink Floyd's 1968 second album Saucerful of Secrets.

Wright had been due to accompany Gilmour on the TV show, but sent the guitarist a text message three weeks ago saying he would not be able to play.

I watched the performance last night, very moving. Gilmour did "Remember A Day" from A Saucerful Of Secrets which was poignant for two reasons - it was written (and originally sung by) Rick and the slide guitar on the original was played by Syd.

Gilmour kept it very understated. Remember A Day doesnt suit his voice and has no trademark Gilmour-esque guitar fills so was a real tribute I thought, its like he was stepping aside to showcase Ricks talent.

Good stuff.

With added Dave - he's doing The Blue (which does have the trademark Gilmour-esque guitar fills).

BTW - Jeff Beck was on Later (in the audience). Whats the betting him and Gilmour spent ages slagging Roger Waters off.

I notice good ol' Rog has yet to make any comment on the passing of Rick, maybe he's afraid of sounding hypocritical.

I know...its hard to say "he was a lovely bloke" when everyone knows you booted him out of the band during the recording of The Wall but didnt tell the fans in case it stopped them buying the record (but paid him a retainer to do The Wall tour for much the same reason). ya bastard Rog...

...but I still think your cool.

At least Gilmour got Rick back for his Floyd and he even got to sing on The Division Bell album.
