Speaking of Stage Presence...

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

talk about stage presence...

I saw Robert Plant and Alison Krauss last night.

Plant still can make me sweat! He is older & wiser now and still belts it out. However, the rock god has been humbled by the sweet song bird ( and I believe its more than a "professional" relationship!)

Third song into the first set... "Black Dog"! A much slower version and with a banjo! Blew me away.

Plant also sang back-up, acappella (spelling?) on the song "Down to the river to pray" (O' Brother soundtrack) to Alison's saprano voice. (This is what I mean by being humbled)

So the highlight for me was hearing the two sing "The Battle of Evermore". Chilling.

I thought it was kinda a weird combination of talent, though I do love their album. But after seeing this show, I felt that all of my musical tastes had converged! Then I think about my poor old mom turning in her grave. She was from the hills and Alison Krauss' music would be right up her ally. I nearly drove her crazy with "Physical Graffiti"...

I got their cd a while ago after reading some of the rave reviews of it - it bored me silly.
And you know that I'll pick up

I can see how it would. I think it was soooo much better live.

Questions, questions, questions. You're just full of questions today, Mr. Wojo

I do believe she is considerably younger than the golden locked Mr. P. Perhaps he's tired of singing about bustles in hedgerows and may queens. Were there lots of shouts for LZ songs from the audience, Watercolors?

Whenever I hear some LZ songs like Misty Mountain Hop or other songs where they sung about hobbits  I'm also reminded of Black Sabbath's song about Fairies wearing boots.
I don't know if it was all the drugs back then but everyone seemed obsessed with seeing things that weren't there. I know Jimmy Page was into that Alistair what's his name? magic stuff too.
The songs didn't have to be ballads but they were definitely weird stories.
I wonder why today's music doesn't seem to have any magic (literally) in it. Aren't the drugs working these days?

I think I read somewhere that Robert Plant is a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien. No doubt an inspiration for some of LZ's lyrics.

Aren't there Tolkien references throughout that one LP?

That seemed cool at the time and even looking back on it, still does, but if today's bands were to put Harry Potter references in their songs it just wouldn't be the same.

I was a big Led Zep fan before hearing about bands like the Bunnymen. According to Jimmy Page in 2003, drugs were an integral part of Led Zeppelin for him from the beginning right to the end.

Jimmy Page was very interested in Aleister Crowley. He even owned his old home and an occult bookstore at one point. Supposedly he is no longer so enthralled with all of that.

Robert Plant's Zeppelin lyrics were most definitely influenced directly by Tolkein's stories as well as Norse and Welsh mythology. Plant says he stopped taking drugs in 1977 after his son died but Zeppelin was pretty much done by then, only putting out one more studio album after that.

1970's pop culture was just brimming with interest in ESP, UFO's, astrology, the occult and the like as the younger siblings of the hippie generation tried to find their own niche and things to believe in, having shunned their parents generations traditions. Those themes showed up in movies, music and television quite a bit. The drugs probably helped. That would explain the pet rock fad anyway.

Apparently not! Shame.

All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down my love
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
This time I'm comin' down

And I hope you're thinking of me
As you lay down on your side
Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

But I know I'm on a losing streak
'Cause I passed down my old street
And if you wanna show, then just let me know
And I'll sing in your ear again

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

'Cause baby, ooh, if heaven calls, I'm coming, too
Just like you said, you leave my life, I'm better off dead

All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down my love
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
This time I'm comin' down

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

But if you wanna show, just let me know
And I'll sing in your ear again

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again

I'm never going down, I'm never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more
I'm never coming down, I'm never going down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more
And you know that I'll pick up
Every time you call
Just to thank you one more time
