The doppler effect is where basically something moving emits a wave e.g sound from an ambulance.As the the ambulance approaches an object(say the ear) the distance between each wavelength is shorter and therefore the frequency is higher and the pitch of the note is higher.As it moves away from the object the wavelengths are longer and therefore the pitch of the note is lower.Hence the daaaa-daaaa-daa-da-daa-daaa-daaaa-daaaa from ambulances when they pass.
