The Cure

Saw The Cure in Hamburg on Friday night. I was never a fan, just got tickets for a Cure fan who was visiting me. The venue is a bit like the MEN but not quite as bad. Still, I was bracing myself.
The start of the set was a bit slow to gain momentum but after about 4 songs it really kicked in.
Mr Smith's voice was CD quality - high notes and all. His voice hadn't changed. In fact they all sounded good. Robert Smith and the bassist looked like they really enjoyed themselves.
They played a good mix of old and newer songs but not The Love Cats and guess what, there was no riot because of that.
In total they played 3 hours straight and then came back to do 2 encores!!
As we were leaving my friend turned and said, "Mac should take notes. They put the Bunnymen's live performances to shame!"

Most "80's survivors" I see live put the Bunnymen to shame.

3 hours? you'd have to be a bit of a fan to get through that. Not that I wouldn't have a go. Did they do any twenty minute dirges? Whilst trawling a Cure forum earlier for malicious gossip (all I found were concerns about his health and weight) i learned that Simon Gallup's son is called Eden. Why do they do this? Calling your kid after a type of cheese. Whatever next.

The three hrs went by fairly quickly, actually. No real 20min dirges but a couple of prolonged solos.
Robert Smith was never the svelte and sexy type and he's definitely added poundage over the past 30 years. He was drinking beer on stage and seemed quite healthy. Mind you I wasn't that close to the stage that I could see just how much his face resembles unbaked bread.

As for the cheesy names, Liverwurst or Pork'n'Onion would be worse.

I'd seen them a few times over the years, and they always seem to do a strong, long set.

When I saw them on the "Wish" tour some years back, they played all the hits in the main set, then over the next 3 encores of 3-4 songs each, they went into more and more obscure songs. The result was that transient listeners left, and the hardcore fans stayed. They ended with a 20 minute version of "The Forest"

They've got the best work ethic of any band I've seen. Ever.

I just saw a rerun of The Cure on Jools Holland and was thinking about the "Mac" factor. Roberts voice was in top form. I looked it up, they are a month apart in age. Both will be 50 in spring of 2009.

I've always been a fan but I never saw them live.

Their 13th album is coming out. Double disc with 13 songs an each one. The number 13 runs throughout. "Christmas Without You" is one of the tracks.

The "later" Cure albums are abit hit and miss. I loved Disintergration and Wish. Bits of Bloodflowers were OK. Wild Mood Swings was all over the place (though had some great moments) and the last self titled album was The Cure's Flowers.

Having said that Im looking forward to the new album. They have still "got it".

Even though I think Head On The Door is a singles masterpiece - it has a few tunes I could do without but others love. The Blood and Never Stop grate on me, but many people love 'em.

Point being - one's miss is often another's hit.

Starting with a festival in Cali, around '02/'03, Will , Bunnymen management and Robert were in serious discussions about a tour with the Bunnymen as openers for the Cure.

Guess who got pissed off at the thought of second billing supporting The Cure

I don't remember that tour.
