The great big U2 thread

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

ah theres bound to be some of that around these parts Mr B, but always a good talking point. Coupl eof years ago when I finally bought CDs od their early stuff I still really liked it. Just the lastr tenty years seem to be a problem - though I've never heard Pop - I hear most fans dont like that, so maybe it'll work.

As fro the money on this one - theres the one for the fans:

the old - four new tracks gag. Not for VB then....

It's one thing to stream it to fans for a bit but this seems like a game changer to have Apple just distribute a big name bands album for free. When I logged into my iTunes it just said "purchased". I didn't have to do anything to get it. At that point I could stream it from iCloud or download the tracks. It doesn't seem like they can count every iTunes account holder as a true purchaser of the album. Maybe they only count the downloads?

Apparently Apple paid U2 100 m USD to release the album for free.

Wow, really? do you have a link? That's way more than I was thinking.

Yes, of course. This link is for U2's website, but the article is from Billboard. http://zootopia.u2.com/topic/28696-guy- ... the-group/

That's plenty more than I thought too...

I used to quite like the early stuff but let's face it everything since Achtung Baby has been a bit shit really.

so i take it (and obv i'm a bit of a luddite on these things) if you have an iphone you can set it to automatically download stuff in which case you'll have got the album whether you wanted it or not? The obvious advice is - dont do that.

This tiler the creator bloke has a view on it:
http://www.nme.com/news/u2/79754
tiler the rapper bloke wrote: "Get off my fucking phone. You couldn't come up with an actual marketing idea? Fuck @U2 I don't want you. Fuck Bono. I didn't ask for you, I'm mad."
He then added: "I did not you were on my phone. Its legit like waking up with a pimple or like a herpe idk I did know you were on my phone. What the fuck."

The album was automatically loaded onto your itunes account, it doesn't matter if it's on a computer or a phone.

On another note, read a comment on a musical forum that these 100 m USD is for the whole campaign with U2, including promotion and all. And that U2 got approx 10 m USD for the album itself. This is just a comment on a board, but somehow that seems accurate to me.

though for those even less capable than me you can get a tool to delete it for you:

According to Neil McCormick - author, writer and all round chum of the yewts sicne the early days theres a 'hipster tsunami of whinging'.

Haven't actually plugged my ipod into my computer for about six months, and its about time I changed what I've got on it (its not that big) so I'll get to listen to it again.
