In the first track of Saint Etienne's new album, they name-check Modern Eon. Familiar name which I couldn't immediately place. Scratched head a while. Muttered name repeatedly. Wracked brain.
It took me a while to recall exactly who they were, but I finally had a flash. Modern Eon were a late '70s/early '80s Eric's band from Liverpool, I finally remembered, who recorded only one LP for DinDisc in 1981. Owed a huge stylistic debt to the Bunnymen and the DelByzanteens, I seemed to recall, and had kind of weak vocals but a hell of a good drummer.
With great effort I located a download of their LP, "Fiction Tales". Kind of a dodgy vinyl rip, but, as this record went almost directly to cut-out status in '81, about as good quality-wise as it's ever gonna get. My memory was dead-on, it seems. Not a bad LP, really (apart from the aforementioned weak vocals and abundance of '80s production cliches). A great "time capsule" thing that really brought back to memory so much of the lost world of 31 years ago (FUCK! I'm old...). The drums are indeed the best thing about it. I had to look up the members' names on Wiki to find out who this drummer was and what he subsequently went on to do.
The drummer was, as a matter of fact, Cliff Hewitt! No wonder it was such a killer beat-fest. He was amazing even then.
