Vampire Weekend--hear whole album for free

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

really enjoyable stuff. There really are good things happening out there. Luckily people like it, too, so they will be around for awhile.

Horchata has my vote since that's a Mexican drink. :)

I was trying to figure out why there was so much push behind this band. Then I saw them on the cover of Under The Radar.

They are the Ah-Ha! of low-fi.

And those jumpers would be something that Morten, Mags and Pal would have been extremely jealous of... about 20 years ago.

I hadn't heard any of Vampire Weekend, so listened to them on Myspace. Flat Happy Shopper fizzy pop music, bad cover version of Paul Simon. They can't be called Al and they look like students too.

In the library studying, gosh chaps the thesis are due in next semester!

Image

What time is the next lecture chaps?
Image

I might get pissed tonight and lay a girlie student. What do you think? You coming out or spending all night on Facebook with your hands down your pants playing with yourselves?

Image

Come on chaps, there's lots of student girlies out there tonight begging for it... chaps?

Not trying to sound like a bitter old man - I just think they are getting a little too much praise for music that doesn't really sound that good and part of the reason might be the cool factor. But then again, pop music is just as much about image as it is about the music for all of us at least some of the time.

Yeah, maybe, maybe not. I rather enjoy a little happy music, particularly after a little Beck.

They don't look very cool to me. I guess the yoof of today have different views as to what counts as "cool". To me, it's crap (and I'd assume white Middle Class) American music, crap clothes and crap hair, and they look like many of the student nerd-types you'd see if you went down to your nearest university campus. These kind of people weren't considered the cool crowd less than a decade ago.

I thought it was the preppy look like the smiths and housemartins once did. Looks pretty british to me.
Actually eatb were dressed like that on the inside sleeve of huh. I think it looks cool. And no one a generation older got eatb when I played them back in the day.

they're loaded and live off vague artisan intuitions of what can be combined to sell and be appealing to a "hip demographic" (whatever that is). Like the Strokes.

It's very, very easy just to appropriate ideas nowadays, especially if said appropriation is backed by increasingly desperate record companies who realise that said band are happy to tow the line.

If you like it that's totally fine, but there's plenty of great happy clappy records about.

Just don't fall for the company line & tell me or anyone what is hot right now, or not. People need to trust their gut instinct more. They're faking it & don't realise.

That preppy look could get you beaten up in the 80s in Britain. I certainly don't advocate being beaten up as a pre-requisite of your artistic intentions or preferences, but I'm not sure bands like this have the mental rectitude or fortitude to stand by their principles

The point was their good looks seem to have open doors that might not otherwise hav been open and now we have to listen to how it is America's fault and that would never happen in Britain.

Image

That wouldn't happen in Britain a decade ago huh?

Image

Only college students do it.

Image

I didn't realize Brits had so many rules about what to wear.

That's suits, sir, not college outfits and I must say a very wise and presentable choice of outfit. Them Vampire Weekenders would be very presentable in a nice black suit, single breasted, nice tie, polished brogues.

There was once upon a time, in terms of "indie bands".

As for Mr McCulloch's jumper, he obviously did his shopping via the Grattan home shopping catalogue back then so he is excused. Les with those white socks, that's going back a bit (albeit for me). White terry towelling socks, slip-on black shoes, jumpers for goalposts...

See, I let my subscription to GQ and Esquire expire, and I have no idea what is what in clothing.

I think all three bands - EATB, Blur and Vamp Weekend look sharp and find it very "cool."

Had you or Lank lived through grunge for even a month stateside you would understand why I feel this way. If you did, I do not understand the problem with those suave coats and sweaters on the mag cover. Maybe I need to spend a weekend at a college bar in Eton to understand the revulsion?

This is the requisite clothing for indie hipster in the states now.

Image

As you can see, Vamp Weekend is going against the grain and would receive condescending smirks (as these hipsters are unable to actually throw a punch) in American indie circles.
