New school bands

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

New school bands

What bands are everyone listening to that have only been around since mid 90s until the present?

Here's a few of mine:

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Mogwai
Sigur Ros
M83
Interpol
TV on the Radio
Ladytron
Blonde Redhead
Grinderman (basically Nick Cave and the Mini-seeds dirtied up, but awesome nonetheless)
and the much recently discussed The Horrors

Isn't sad that now we talk about bands that have a decade and a hlaf as new but when we were kids we talked about bands a year or two old?

From your list:
Sigur Ros
M83
Interpol
TV on the Radio
Ladytron

And then
Longwave
MGMT
Hiis & Chamber
Film School
Brandi Calile
Deerhunter
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Shiny Toy Guns (first cd)
Kill Hannah

Film School

Reality has a way of biting you in the ass as more time passes by.
As for Film School, it's pretty crazy that a band I shared a stage with (the band I was in at the time were on the same bill about 4 years ago) is now signed to Beggars !

I forget to mention The Hives on my list. Another example of a band that's not breaking new ground, but very tight, extremely entertaining, but do not take themselves too seriously.

It gets worse. If you were in any small music scene - even just as a fan - as time goes by you will find yourself watching the Grammys going - hey I know that guy! I went to their show when they opened for the Dead Milkmen and we hung out. Why didn't I become his best friend?!??! WHY?!?!?!?

You all deserve a Grammy. Well, an Emmy at least.

The Bravery

The Ting Tings (go ahead and rail me for it, I expect it - I know a lot of you up here hate them!)

I never liked Linkin Park - but I think that new tune (is it for the Transformers?) is great. Of course, real LP fans probably hate it.
Sounds like the band is trying to "grow up" a little lyrically. Reminds me of Shiny Toy Guns.

I love Linkin Park - their last album, Minutes to Midnight kicked ass. They always give so much energy at their shows. I saw them on their tour last summer - they had this crazy, Mad Max, punk rock drum core that came on stage with them for a couple of the songs. I just love Chester's voice too!

James Yorkston
Fiery Furnaces
British Sea Power
Appie Kim
most things on the following labels, Monika, Staubgold, Kranky & In the Red

Super Furry Animals - One of my favorite bands but after their fourth album they've gradually gone downhill, IMO. Mwng, Ice Hockey Hair EP and Radiator are all awesome, though.

Fiery Furnaces
The Marked Men
The Strokes
Flin Flon
Cotton Candy

And that's about it, it's kinda depressing, I guess I'm not looking hard enough. I'll listen to bands like The Killers, Interpol, British Sea Power, Wilco, Animal Collective, Ratatat, Yeah yeah yeahs, etc. and like two or three songs off their albums but that's about it, definitely not enough to justify owning their albums. I've heard a decent number of newer Indie/alternative bands on the radio where I work and a lot of it sounds like crap.

Alot of you like Fiery Furnaces. I haven't heard them. Actually they are playing tonight in my area. I'll have to check their music out sometime.

James Yorkston? Congratulations L.F.- Anyone who has discovered the "Future Folk" Fence records acts is a person of good taste. Not only is J.Y. the superior version of Leonard Cohen but when playing on the culture show with Hot Chip, King Creosote and Rozi Plain (singing Tortoise regrets Hare) introduced me to a new universe of talent that more than compensates for the slow decline of my 80's icons (Bunnymen, chameleons, cope) and as for KC, he is the new John Lennon (except better) Rachel Dadd is a genius version of Joni Mitchell and as for Rozi Plain with the fantastic drummer (Sam) and guitarist (Francois) now known as Premier words fail me-I saw them in Winchester and the vibe must have been like the first time the Bunnymen played Eric's! I saw Rozi and her band in Bristol and they were sweet/great there, but now they have hardened up into something ferociously powerful. I hate crusty traditional folk but this is a completely different thing. P.S. don't check out you-tube/myspace expecting to find her best songs, not being daft she makes sure the best material has to be bought. Go to one of the live shows, seize the moment, because as we all know, even the greatest bands don't last forever. I missed seeing Queen live just as they were starting out in a small venue in Bournemouth, far worse I missed seeing the Chameleons on the reunion tour (see the marvelous Ascension DVD to see what I missed) and so I have vowed never to miss an opportunity to worship at the feet of living gods/goddesses ever again.

Fiery Furnaces? Never heard of them. Sounds an interesting name. I'll check them out.
