Depressive, sad songs...

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

About time somebody mentions Nick Cave in this thread... particularly the Boatman's Call album. Even more specifically: Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere? How he goes from describing past glory, reminiscing a wonderful day with the girl who would become his wife, to the chorus 'Wake up my love, my lover wake up".

And then, there's some really really really great stuff to be found in the catalogue of Joseph Arthur, american singer-songwriter who I hold in the highest of regards. Take his song Invisible Hands:

There are things we cannot know
Invisible hands which guide the show from up above
And sometimes you are forced to go
far away and shut the door on the one you love
Now I don't know just where you are
Your photograph sits like a scar against my wall
Such a pretty face - the sunshine in your eyes
Taken on that day, when all we had was love

Shut the light on me

Now Jesus he came down here just to die for all our sins
I need him to come back here and die for me again
'Cause I can not forgive myself for what it is I've done
Avoiding your memory like a vampire does the sun
And all I want is your love
All I want is your love

Shut the light on me

something i don't get about this thread.........if you're depressed, shouldn't you be listening to happy music, to cheer you up? rather than listening to more depression? it's no wonder people kill themselves! depression upon depression.....

listen to something happy FFS!

try Space Flower by the Wild Swans...........there's no way you can feel depressed after playing that cd! has to be one of the poppiest happiest sounding cds i ever heard! makes me wanna hop in my seat when i'm driving down the road! hehehee

Yeah, it's great isn't it?
Red, maybe try him on the radio plays first.....that's what I started on way back in *cough cough* 1980. I just downloaded the whole BBC series for my daughter. She still prefers the 2005 movie though. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371724/

Seven Seas wrote:Nothing beats a good, heavy breathing type of cry while listening to sad songs, it clears you out. Or a deep-rooted cut, at that. It's that clear-out that makes one realize what's important to cry about & what exactly isn't....

I forgot about the Crow soundtrack, It Can't Rain All of the Time by Jane Siberry. Oi.

That soundtrack is exceptionally good and the Jane Siberry song is really haunting. I love the Thrill Kill Kult track, the NIN cover of "Dead Souls" isn't as bad as history would lead you to believe.

Great movie too. Though sometimes I wonder if it would have the same emotional impact had Brandon Lee not died.

Flaming Lips - "Waitin' For a Superman" is a really sad touching song dealing with the terminal illness of Wayne Coyne's father. I love the lyrics.

Asked you a question
I didn't need you to reply
Is it gettin' heavy?
But they'll realize
Is it gettin' heavy?
Well I thought it was already as heavy
As can be

Is it overwhelming
To use a crane to crush a fly?
It's a good time for Superman
To lift the sun into the sky

'Cause it's gettin' heavy
Well I thought it was already as heavy
As can be

Tell everybody
Waitin' for Superman
That they should try to hold on
Best they can
He hasn't dropped them
Forgot them
Or anything
It's just too heavy for Superman to lift

Is it gettin' heavy?
Well I thought it was already as heavy as can be.

Tell everybody
Waitin' for Superman
That they should try to hold on
Best they can
He hasn't dropped them
Forgot them
Or anything
It's just too heavy for Superman to lift

Good one BF...alongs those same lines son to father, Perfect Memory by Remy Zero

Remember how they always seemed to know
We had the forest in our eyes
But the earth was in our clothes
And they thought we'd fall
Not at all

So look back on the treasured days
We were young in a world that was so tired
Though it's not what we wanted before
Even the saints had to crawl from the floor
Summers when the money was gone you'd sing
All you're little songs that meant everything to me

And I'll remember you
And the things that we used to do
And the things that we used to say
I'll remember you that way

Remember how they tried to hold you down
And we climbed those towers
And looked down upon our town
And everything you hoped would last
Just always becomes your past (it hurts)
Summers when the money was gone you'd sing
All your little songs that meant everything to me

And I'll remember you
And the things that we used to do
And the things that we used to say
I'll remember you always

But then this world slipped through my fingers
And even the sun seemed tired
I still cared
As I lowered you down my heart just jaded
In that moment the earth made no sound
But you were there
You helped me lift my pain into the air

I still miss you
God I still miss you
I know that you are waiting there
I always thought that you'd come home

And I'll remember you
And the things that we used to do
And the things that we used to say

If it don't hurt you
It won't hurt me
It don't hurt me
Then it won't hurt you
If it don't hurt you
It won't hurt me that way
