Metallica go hardcore (about time)

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Going to see them Monday. I think Robert Trujillo is a MONSTER bass player.

Will report back

Not too proud to say I went, and had a helluva good time!

Openers were Sword and Lamb of God (sucked)

Normally when bands play Key Arena, they play at one end.
Metallica's stage was in the center of the arena - bigger than a basketball court

They played a strong 18-song set, chock full o' lazerbeams and pyro. With the stage in the center, the band were able to play to the whole audience - none of this stand-by-your-mic-in-the-dark-and-sing-till-it's-time-to-leave shit.

At the last song, the houselights came up, and hundreds of black beachballs of various sizes (ranging from 2 feet wide to 6 feet wide) fell from the ceiling. The clincher was after the last song. The band stayed onstage for like 20 minutes, just screwing around, kicking balls into the crowd, tossing out pics and drumsticks into the crowd, slapping hands with fans, and seemingly having a good time.

One thing they do, that the Bunnymen could easily do to make a buck - the day after the performance, the show is available for purchase online, complete with artwork. 10 bucks for mp3, 13 bucks for FLAC. Any of us know how great a souvenir "official" live recordings of the shows we attend would be.

Until they kick out Lars and start drinking too excess again, I'm afraid I can't be bothered.

It was a good show. I'm not what you would call a fan, by any means, but my appreciation for them has grown the past few years. I think the addition of Trujillo had a lot to do with that. As for Lars - he seems to consider himself the leader of the band. Still a douchebag.

Clear Channel and their Instant Live - thankful they lost the patent rights on that one

http://www.dmwmedia.com/news/2007/03/13 ... -cd-patent

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) will be canceling Instant Live's patent for creating digital recordings of live performances. The decision came after the company did not respond to the PTO's notices concerning a reexamination of the patent rights.

The patent did not involve a technology-based invention. It was a "method and system" to significantly improve the speed at which recordings of live performances could be mass-produced and the costs of producing the recordings (patent 6,614,729).

mildly amusing interview with the singer dude on the BBC website:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/music ... 000607.stm

gives the impression that perhaps he's just given the same interview just a little too often. sample quote:

If I'm in a good mood I'm going to write something really great. Or if I'm in a bad mood I'm going to write something really great. Somewhere in the middle, I'll wait until one of those other emotions happens. Or if I get a really good guitar sound in the tuning room, that will spur on a great riff too.
