In my defense I do have a wicked head cold.

Erm, does that mean that Phil Collins is better than Echo & The Bunnymen?

The first release Violet Hill is so for a reason - it is the best song. The opening track attempts a "Where the Streets Have No Name" synth intro thing far too long kind of like Van Halen's title track on 1984- the opening track Cemeteries of London has a title Robert Smith should rip off. Oh, is not memorable.
The rest of the cd is ok in that others have done it better already - Violet Hill and Strawberry Swing are a bit like Peter Gabriel's sing along songs - 42 is somewhere between Billy Joel and James - a nice song. Lovers In Japan again has that Peter Gabriel "Solsbury Hill" thing while "Strawberry Swing" has a catchy verse- but lacks a memorable chorus.
"Yes" (which has a good bit of AM drone I like) and Viva La Vida would had benefitted from having Tim Booth in the studio giving tips along with Eno. They are good but should be so much better considering all the hoopla.
I think Eno worked with what he had. If they are going to be a pop band with sing along stadium songs- make the choruses memorable.
I got what I wanted - an easy listening cd to give me a break from all the independent music I have. I would like the cd even more had it been half the price - but I feel I shelled a good buck for an e.p.'s worth of music.
Finally, I can see why you folks in Europe would hate the band - getting the big itune deal and Tesco sales because they do nothing to challenge the listener rather than despite it is enough to aggravate any fan of the first four Bunnymen albums.

Let me politely show you the door from this establishment to the following:
Mr Collins will welcome you
We don't want your sort around here (but they will) - please get your coat and leave
