Don't worry - their shells will soften in less than a year and you'll be either flushing them or burying them in the backyard after they croak.

Why are they going to die???? I can't let that happen.

I built them a little perch under the light so they could get out of the water and dry off completely. Will that keep their shells from softening?

I'm sorry, but shell softening is a fact of life in the little turtle world.

Have you let them run across the floor yet?

"Aquatic turtles require fairly elaborate housing. They need regular exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, so pricey bulbs designed for reptiles that produce UVA and UVB light are needed for turtle tanks. Without this light, metabolic bone disease (soft shell syndrome) can result."

I got the light.

And no since they can carry salmonella they stay in the tank and not the floor. I'm on thin ice when it comes to the turtles, if one of the kids gets sick I'm a dead man.

I think you should just flush the turtles now.

Trust me, you accidentally let one of your kids die and you will never hear the end of it. She will be throwing that one in your face any chance she gets.
