New school bands

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Ah, cool! JY is great, a good guy too, all his LPS are marvellous and yes, Fence is another tremendous label. You got the " Krautrock" EP he did?

We did a nice interview with him about 5 years back.

King Creosote's last LP, Flick the V's is shit hot.
I should also add Julian Cope to the list above.

Julian Cope as well? A true connoisseur. Though to fully qualify you must like the Chameleons as well, particularly "Dangerous Land" or "Tears."
Have you heard the Peel session of Cope's "Darkness and Confusion?"-I have it on a metal tape somewhere. Very impressive.
As for KC all I have heard is a few (excellent) snippets, and there is quite some vibe about him. I am looking foward to seeing him live.

You will love King Creosote live..
Love the Chameleons too, tho' I know people who are nutters for them, heard of Cath Aubergine? I have Tears, Strange Times & Script of... on original vinyl.

The Peel stuff I have of Copey is on the Floored Genius 2 LP & Zoology LP, got tons of his stuff, tho' by no means a completist (is that really possible with him?)
Black Sheep is stunning mind.

Really? Just sounds like a guy rambling on (not singing that is for sure) while he plays arpeggios.

My bad. The tracks I had heard were not like these on his myspace. And I am not the one to be critiquing folk music. I find it so dull and boring that I am unable to appreciate it.

Isn't he on the Domino label? Are Fence and Domino connected?

I went to their show when they opened for the Dead Milkmen and we hung out. Why didn't I become his best friend?!??! WHY?!?!?!?

True. I knew the guy, Itaal Shur, who wrote the music for the song "Smooth" by Santana in 1999. He was in the Cincinnati music scene in an art-rock band called Red Math in the mid to late 1980's. He left at some point. The next time I saw him he was receiving a Grammy for that song.

James Yorkston's voice, like Dylan or Leonard Cohen's voice is an acquired taste, but the songwriting transcends it in my opinion. When he is helped
by the rest of the Fence collective with much stronger voices things become more impressive. This one includes with Hot Chip, King Creosote, James
Yorkston and (not shown in the interview) Rozi Plain.

I particularly recommend Rozi Plain with her full band set (they are radical) and Rachael Dadd, who though marginally more traditional than Rozi is an equally brilliant God-like genius(ess) and a million light years away from the drab folk pub rock stereotype you have in mind. It's only folk in that way the Magnet's "Willows Song" (from the sexy bit in the "Wicker Man") or Jefferson Airplanes "White Rabbit" or even the Bunnymens "Flaming Red" or the Chameleons Tears are folk. The railway Inn Winchester gig I attended on 16 August 2009 might even have topped that! The most exciting thing since the start of Erics Club. Now re-educate yourself by attending these gigs. I didn't buy £1400 worth of equipment to film them (free of charge) for nothing.

When you say filmed - do you have video you can post?

He is, not sure what the crack is between the two tbh, but Domino are seemingly pretty relaxed about their artists projects, so there'll be something worked out.

I got and learned the whole (complicated high end) video camera and software in a day (being a nerd has it's advantages) on Friday. I can now transfer to normal standard definition DVD and edit/store HD on my computer, but need to get a blue ray disc and also have a high end stereo microphone and stereo radio link to the instruments/mixer, which involves interacting with the band to find out what their setup is for me to plug in, and I'm hoping they and bring their 8-track and use software to sync it to my Dolby 5.1 surround track for a good mix. Only trouble is I am a bit shy of one of the singers because I went a bit over the top in my praise of her and she thought I was some kind of weirdo. Well I am a weirdo, but harmless.
If the band want to put snippets of the HD material on youtube that's up to them, but I won't because I hope they make money out of selling the blu-rays at their concerts.
Of course, with enough practice I might later have the option of turning my video production hobby into a career. If Mac livens up and does a decent setlist (fat chance) I might bring my camera round to one of the Bunnymen's concerts. As for Mark Burgess, The Chameleons already have a perfect live video, Ascension, so I wouldn't bother with them.
I'm off to train my camera on the Red Arrows in Bournemouth today or tomorrow. I might walk the entire west coast path and video every step with two HD cameras when I can afford it and offer it as a stereoscopic V.R. glasses experience to the public, for a fee.
