Overrated bands

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

You are retarded.

Be that as it may...the Beatles are still overrated and apparently some of my fellow Special Olympic athletes are in agreement with me.

I had a big long screed about context and innovation and contributions to music that many take for granted but I think I'll just stick with what JackT said.

Ban them! Ban them!

They wouldn't be the band you think they are without George Martin, who has also said (and I can't remeber his exact words) they are overrated.

Who cares? Nobody denies that George Martin was the fifth Beatle. Greatest producer ever.

The Beatles were/are shite and it really pisses me off how Liverpool is known as "Beatle City". Meh!

Coldplay definitely! He name drops and marries an actress then becomes famous. All their songs sound the same to me. Earlier this year I realized they had more than one album.

And Snow Patrol came out of nowhere as the best thing (per radio).

Actually, you've got the order wrong. They were famous before he namedropped the Bunnymen and married Gwyneth. It was because of their fame that anybody ever cared about him namedropping the band, and it was because of their fame that he ever met Ms. Paltrow.

The namedropping still pisses me off, because the Bunnymen didn't exploit it. From my understanding, the band were offered an opening slot, Ian refused to be an opening act (in dramatic form, ruining his friendship with Mr. Martin)... then, all of the sudden, Richard Ashcroft is the one being namedropped

Yet it is my understanding that a co-tour was discussed among both parties and when the opening act was finally announced, it wasn't the Bunnymen. Thus leading to Ian's comment that where he comes from a handshake means something.

My sequence of events for Coldplay:
1. don't like songs and don't pay any attention
2. name drops and marries actress, pushed down my throat (media/radio) and cannot escape
3. back to not paying attention

I think it's great that bands come along with an influence from the Bunnymen and achieve great success. It's just the nature of popular music. It happened in the 80's when the Bunnymen came along and cited Television/Velvet Underground/Doors/Bowie. I suspect that original followers of Television/Velvet Underground/Doors/Bowie think perhaps that the Bunnymen ripped off their favorite artists too.

The Bunnymen came out as the headliner, because Ian would have no less. The co-headlining tour with the Furs was ego-shattering enough.

I know I pick at Ian McChrist a lot, but come on now - who's got a better chance of selling the big venues?

I think the Psychedelic Furs are very underrated.

It's really too bad that at this point in their careers, the Bunnymen won't open/support a newer band. It's a great way for younger like-minded music fans to see them and there is no pressure to fill the venue. It would take them to cities (like mine) where they have not been since the 80's. Much better than a festival gig if you ask me and probably more money.

Leonard Cohen

Iggy Pop
The Ramones
Nick Cave (oh no you di'int)
Lou Reed
The Cure
The Doors

With the possible exception of The Cure, incorrect on all counts.

Any list of overrated bands must include Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd, MC5, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, The Jam, Oasis and Deep Purple.
