The not quite so obligatory 4AD bands thread...

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

The not quite so obligatory 4AD bands thread...

Postby Scouser » Sun Dec 06, 2009 1:49 pm

Whilst commenting on the Liz Fraser topic it occured to me (not for the first time) that alot of my favourite music is on 4AD...

Cocteau Twins
Dead Can Dance
This Mortal Coil
The Pixies
...plus quite a few more

Anyone out there remember Colourbox?
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Sort of. That was a collaboration between AR Kane (another 4AD band) and Colourbox under the moniker MARRS (somehow it now turns up on Colourbox compilations though).

Colourbox only produced one self titled album...but its great...

I never knew that Colourbox were involved in the MARRS stuff. "Hot Doggie" by Colourbox from the "Lonely is an Eyesore" compilation still cuts it for me, great track.

The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme - great stuff (was actually written about Baseball trivia fans)

PALE SAINTS, fucking amazing band, their debut was genius.

AR Kane were on Creation were they not?

XMAL Deutschland, and the Throwing Muses stood out for me, apart from the obvious Cocteaus-Pixies-Dead Can Dance triumvirate.

Although they spent only a brief period on 4AD, A.R. Kane had a hand in the most freakish success in the label's history. The studio-based outfit comprised East London duo Alex Ayuli and Rudi Tambala, who described their music as "dreampop". After releasing their debut EP on the One Little Indian label, they moved to 4AD in 1987 and issued the Lollita 12", which was produced by Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins. Alex and Rudi then left for Rough Trade.

During their brief stint on 4AD, A.R. Kane had taken up Ivo's suggestion that they collaborate with labelmates Colourbox. The session produced a sample-heavy dance track titled "Pump Up The Volume", which was released under the name M|A|R|R|S and astounded all concerned by reaching number one in the UK charts. It remains the biggest single in 4AD's history.
