Did U2 Really Rip Off the Bunnymen?

We know there is more to life than the music of the Bunnymen. Talk about those other bands here.

Did U2 Really Rip Off the Bunnymen?

Postby black francis » Sun Oct 25, 2009 9:46 am

I only became aware of them at the time of the Joshua tree and I never really heard the comparisons. U2 seemed to me more traditionally rock based while the Bunnymen were a little more out there, more moody, more atmospheric. I was a U2 fan up to Achtung Baby (still think The Fly is a great, great song) but they seemed to lose the plot after that and Bono became a bit too preachy for my tastes.

It's funny though all the U2/Bono bashing Mac has done and continues to do and the band (and Bono in particular) have been by appearances complete gentlemen. Even after Bono said that Mac was always better but U2 had better management, Mac hasn't backed off. I loved that quote about not wanting U2's fans. I gotta call bullshit on that one. I think Mac would love to sell that many albums. Isn't that what the Fountain is supposed to do?

And no matter what he says I bet he'd love to be selling out 90,000 seater enormodomes too instead of playing at the equivalent of the local pub.

never seen it myself. there were similarities early on but edge bloke had that signature sound on the first album. if they had stuff before that borrowed fro the buns i have no idea. first heard them around the october album and my mate said dont buy that, get 'Boy' so i did and thought it was really good. went off them around rattle and hum though the last albumn i bought was the one with the bass players knob on the cover. Still think Boy is probably ther best album but it sounds like a first album whereas crocodiles is the fully formed product - did i say product? u2 never had the groove the buns had. buns never had the work ethic. first saw U2 on the War tour at hammersmith palais (fantastic venue) and he came on waving the flag and stuff, yattering on between songs. They started pumping dry ice and he threw a bit of a wobbly saying 'get rid of this stupid smoke'. A week later saw the buns (for the second time), classic drums on the left and stand in a line period, mac hardly said a word, ten tons of smoke, back lit and silhouettes (cant believe people still moan about 'bad lighting') and i thought, this is it.

They're playing the Rose Bowl in Pasadena so I was just thinking about them.

Bet you won't hear Bono trashing Wolverhampton halfway through a song tonight at the Rose Bowl. Or witness an angry, drunk woman in a frumpy, Pythonesque hat punching the guy in the seat next to hers because he paid $50 for his ticket and she paid $300 for hers

Did they come to the concert together?

Too bad I didn't see that woman in the hat, but I DID see A LOT of extremely tattooed women!

Sorry I missed you, Zabird! The Yard House was packed at 7:00.

The Bunnymen going after the pop crowd and now U2 claiming their album is too challenging for the pop crowd.
