the first time i saw this "commercial" i was appalled. i felt personally offended that they would do that to my favorite movie. the song completely sucks. and they don't even act like they are "paying homage" to something great. it comes off like they are making fun of it.

it made me very sad. :frown:

i know it's stupid to get that worked up over a commercial, but it really does bother me. don't mess with a classic!!!

stupid JC Penney

So what Bunnymen songs would make good commercials??

Do It Clean - shower gel
Get In The Car - Ford Echo
Lips Like Sugar - candy flavored lip gloss
Seven Seas - feminine hygiene product ("...some fresher feeling..")
Nothing Lasts Forever - retirement financial planning

Ha ha. For some strange reason, I have thought about that reference to Seven Seas...

This reminds me of when Aerosmith fans got all upset about Run DMC doing a cover of Walk This Way . . .in the 80s.

Except, this isn't about somebody remaking a John Hughes (or is it Waters, Brian?) classic for theatrical release.

This is about JCPenney fucking with a John Hughes (Waters, Brian?) classic for an ad campaign.

Yeah, the remake of the song sucks, but it's not even Simple Minds' song. They didn't write it, and they were third choice to perform it for the movie (behind Billy Idol and Bryan Ferry - thank you, Pop-Up Video).

And, by the way - Aerosmith owe Run DMC a debt of gratitude. They'd have never met the kind of success they have now, if it weren't for Run DMC's cover.

Yep.

Simple Minds were the perfect choice for that song, they have a certain emotive ernestness that enabled them to pull of that song like nobody else could.

The DMC cover brought something new and unique to the Aerosmith tune, and could stand on its own.

That crappy Simple Minds cover sounds like a bunch of kids who are not sure if the song is ironic or cool or what, and end up soundling like something from the Shrek IV soundtrack.

People called in to a Boston rock station with the same vitriol when they played DMC.

I don't get your comparison. Are we even reading the same thread?

"This reminds me of how pissed people got when they brought out New Coke" would be as apt a comparison.

This commercial is really sad, but it's even worse that it's JCPenney. Did they even do focus groups? What are we to believe; that people that shop at JCPenney are huge 80s fans that would get the reference and appreciate it? It's actually really insulting to our age group.

I didn't hear any complaining when Ramones shirts started popping up in department stores and Pepsi commercials but now they've gone too far?

The time to get upset was a while ago. The Smiths and Nissan anyone? We've already given them permission to plunder anything and everything that was meaningful to us years ago.

And that song sucked before the J.C. Penny house band got a hold of it anyways.
