I've enjoyed The Orville as well. I can't be bothered to pony up the monthly fee for CBS All Access to watch the sanctioned Star Trek: Discovery series. I was very surprised and intrigued by many of the plot lines on The Orville, especially the gender reassignment episode. I was surprised they tackled that topic, being it was a new show and all.
Many Star Trek alums, from both in front and behind the camera, have shown up as directors, writers, etc. Plus Seth McFarland is a big Star Trek fan. It feels like an extension of Next Generation with some Voyager thrown in, but a bit more laid back. They have a gorgeous set for the main deck. Now all they need is transporter technology. Maybe Isaac brought it back from when he was on that planet for 700 years, since they had developed the technology.
It's been renewed for a second season. My favorite character is Bortus. Gives a new meaning to dead pan.
