The Song of Ice and Fire series, of which
A Game of Thrones is the first book, is highly regarded among enthusiast of the Fantasy genre. These are fairly long novels, and are somewhat unique for a number of reasons. First, although fantasy, the fantasy elements are rather muted in that they are mostly implicit. Second, George R. R. Martin employs a device wherein each chapter is told from the point of view of a different character, and each chapter bears the name of that character. Therefore, there are many "Tyrion" chapters, "Sansa" chapters, etc. (This fact alone accounts for some of the difference between the HBO series and the books, as this simply cannot be duplicated in a television show.)
The most recent book (the fourth in the series), entitled
A Dance with Dragons, is rather slow going in the beginning, and I myself lost patience with it. (I have read a LOT of slow fiction, but I have to be convinced it is worth it.) Martin fans became somewhat angry with the author due to the very long hiatus between books 3 and 4, and because book 3 was something of a cop-out in terms of development.
As an aside, there is an extremely complicated card game based upon these books, and I am a competitive player of it. I played at the GenCon world tournament this past summer. I did not do well but it was pretty interesting.
