Why does being edgy have to stop with age? (what is edgy anyway?...for the sake of this discussion lets say musically it means experimental).
Look at Depeche Mode. Played it safe with Violator, followed it with Songs To Learn & Sing - their most uncompromising and difficult album up to that point. Bearing in mind this was at the peak of their fame. Some fans hated it.
Played it safe in the aftermath of the Devotional Tour, Gahans near death experience etc with two safe albums (Ultra and Exciter - sort of Evergreen and WAYGTDWYL equivalents) then came back with Playing The Angel. If ever an album divided DM fans its that one - half of the forums hated it and went ballistic. Its still getting slated now by some people.
Why? Its uncompromising, noisy, dense, claustrophobic, discordant...
And utterly brilliant.
DM still have a massive global fanbase. The Bunnymen are playing two nights in the Carling Academy. Not playing it safe doesnt seem to have done them any harm.
The Bunnymen have played it safe since Porcupine. They are playing two nights at the Carling Academy in Liverpool this Christmas. With the same set they played last year.
And the year before.
And the year before that.
And the year before that.
And you wonder why I am angry / edgy or whatever you want to call it. As I have said before this is the band who recorded Happy Death Men, Gods Will Be Gods, Thorn Of Crowns...
...i.e songs that are unlisteneable to Coldplay fans.
You all give me one good reason why they should abandon all that to commit History Chimes to vinyl. Especially as you can sense there are moments (the aforementioned Scissors In The Sand being a prime example) when they a straining to let rip.
Please dont say "people in middle age just want to be mellow" as I think we have established that is patently not the case...
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.
Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.
