If I were the candidates, I wouldn't return the money to the AIG execs. Maybe they could donate it to charity (food banks, etc) - or cut a check to the IRS to put it back in the government coffers

I think the article suggested just sending the money to the US Treasury. I'd be on board for charity donations.
Someone needs to shut Dodd up quick. Did he forget he slipped in the provision to allow these bonuses to be paid?

According to the latest thing I read, he does not know how that provision got in there, or who wrote it.

Denying bonuses while the company is still public is total populist pandering, is it not? If these people have a contract for these bonuses and are denied them they will simply go to court and get them. If one person makes their quota despite the place doing poorly there is a legal obligation to honor that.
The only way out is to take it private and put AIG into bankruptcy. Nationalize it and sell it off in a couple of years.
This lending money and picking and choosing what areas of the company the gov is going to run is ludicrous.
