Dry States

I pity the fool who lives in a dry state

Oklahoma - 4.0% ABV/3.2 ABW or higher only sold at room temperature in liquor stores, Liquor Stores closed on Sundays and some holidays. As of 2007, liquor stores are now open on election days.

Utah - ABW > 3.2% beer sold in state controlled stores only. State controlled store closed on Sundays and cease operations no later than 10 p.m. the rest of the week. Restaurants and "Private Clubs" must buy from the State controlled store (no delivery) at retail prices. No alcohol served on Election Day until 8PM. No alcohol served in restaurants without purchase of food. Only 3.2% beer available on tap. Ban on the sales of kegs

Kansas - Kansas's alcohol laws are among the strictest in the United States. Kansas prohibited all alcohol from 1881 to 1948, and continued to prohibit on-premises sales of alcohol from 1949 to 1987. Sunday sales only have been allowed since 2005. Today, 29 counties still do not permit the on-premises sale of alcohol. 59 counties require a business to receive at least 30% of revenue from food sales to allow on-premises sale of alcohol. Only 17 counties allow general on-premises sales. Not all communities which allow off-premises sales allow sales on Sunday. Sales are prohibited on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. The only alcoholic beverage which grocery stores and gas stations may only sell is beer with no more than 3.2% alcohol by weight. Other liquor sales only are allowed at state-licensed retail liquor stores. Kansas has comprehensive open container laws for public places and vehicles, public intoxication laws, and requirements for prospective on-premises or off-premises licensees.

Kansas. What a hell hole that must be. Teaching religion in public school science class and you can't even get a good drink!

What's funny is Missouri right next door is probably the third most relaxed state.

Hey, at least the buckle on the Bible Belt finally legalized liquor by the drink. When I was in college back in the late '70s and early '80s, it wasn't. At least not legally. A lot of winking and raids by state agents, including a spectacular one on a home game day in Norman. Nothing like thousands of irate Sooner fans

Here in North Carolina hard liquor is only sold at the state controlled stores called "ABC" stores, which are closed on Sundays. Beer and wine is sold normally at grocery stores and specialty shops. The taxes for hard liquor go to education. But it's funny here, you can buy the mini airplane bottles of liquor at those stores and you can buy spray paint with no problems but in Chicago, both those mini-bottles and spray paint are banned.

I lived in NC once and thought I would seek out a little local bar and hear a band or something. Nope. The only places that served alcohol were places that sold food as a majority of it's sales, so basically restaurants only and that meant no neighborhood bars. I think there were loopholes but thats how I recall it. They also had "Gentleman's Clubs" where you could bring your own and then pay someone to serve it to you or something crazy like that. I never went to one. Is that all still about right?

In Buffalo, NY the bars are open 'til 4 am. Everynight. They open around noon. This originally was for the steel workers. It is now a "tourist attraction" for people from neighboring counties, Erie, Pennsylvania and Fort Erie, Canada which close between 1 and 2 am.

One of the most popular nights of the year is when the clocks roll back because the college kids get an extra hour of drinking.

Labatt - I forget whichopened their American HG in Buffalo because the city consumes more of it beer than any other in the U.S.

You should feel lucky. We can't buy alcohol at grocery stores here in Pa. and we have the same deal with liquor, you get it at state operated stores only. (and i think they're closed on Sunday)So we have to go to 2 different places to buy beer and liquor if we're having a party! And the Sunday sales at bars only started a few years back.

yeah i was going to mention PA... the "state stores" have all the hard alcohol, and you have to go to a separate beer distributor to buy beer (usually sold by the case ONLY). going to college in philadelphia, we would drive over the bridge to NJ where you can buy the beer and liquor in the same store, usually for much cheaper... and you could buy a 6 pack or sometimes even single bottles/cans if you didn't want to buy a full case of beer. and the liquor/beer stores are open on sundays in NJ too.

Well SoCal is turning into little TJ but at least I can still buy my beer and Jack all at the same place pretty much whenever I want. That gives me some joy in life.
