Early voting is still unconstitutional, regardless of how many jobs you have.

"The Day on which they shall give their votes" refers to the electors, not individual voters. Individual voters may vote early, as has been upheld in various courts across the country, but the Electoral College votes won't be allocated until Election Day.

Ah yes, the electoral college. That's what really counts, not the general populace vote (which is really just for show).

Thanks Mr. Bunny. I am no longer puzzled.

Hey, I think the Electoral College is archaic (sp?) as hell. It's horse and buggy shit, required in a time before the internet, fax machines, phones or telegraph lines. This country could've and should've done away with the Electoral College 100 years ago.

Simple popular vote is a far more "archaic" notion, and one with which the founders were certainly familiar. Electoral votes are distributed in exactly the same way legislative representation is: each state gets 2 Senators, regardless of size, and congressmen are apportioned according to state population with the minimum being 2 congressmen.

Perhaps you think New York City should elect the President and dominate the House and Senate, but I think the system, as it stands, is a wise one.

I wasn't talking about the House and Senate, jackass... way to extrapolate. Next you're going to say I pal around with terrorists.

Just wanted to share my tale of disenfranchisement:

Between the rain and multiple accidents/disabled vehicles, my commute from Dulles, VA to Ellicott City, MD took two and a half hours his evening.

Nevertheless, I was able to get to my polling place 20 minutes before it closed. Exhausted, I walked in, no waiting, and gave my name to the lady at the table.

My name came up in the system as being registered in Baltimore City, where I have not lived for 3 years. I showed her my license showing my current address, just blocks away.

She said sometimes the address change doesn't "go through" the system, so I would have to fill out a provisional ballot.

So, the head guy comes over and says I can fill out a provisional ballot BUT IT WON'T COUNT. I would, however, get "credit" for voting in that my name would not be removed from the roles entirely.

I was a little incredulous, and he reiterated that because I am not voting in the precinct in which I am registered, my vote would not be counted. I asked how I could be legally registered in a precinct in which I did not legally reside, and he just shrugged.

So, I went through the ridiculous ritual of filling out a ballot that would not be counted under any circumstances.

I realize that my vote wouldn't count anyway, since Maryland is not a swing state and is always carried overwhelmingly by the Democratic candidate, so the election is basically a formality.

What is a little upsetting, though, is that people are voting illegally and fraudulently all over this country, and I, a citizen willing and able to document my identity and residence am unable to vote. That kind of sucks if you ask me.

My point is that they are based on exactly the same principal and are in fact, the same system. I would only say you pal around with terrorists if it were true, like Obama and Ayers, for example.

If you're talking about the fraudulent registrations - Mickey Mouse and Homer Simpson ain't gonna be voting, pal. That was all about temp workers getting paid for lists of names on a sheet of paper, not voter fraud.

As for being registered in the wrong place, Obama had this cool thing where you could type in your name and find out if and where you were registered, and where your polling place was. It was pretty cool. I had a few friends and relatives check it out.

Oh, and I voted by mail-in...

The same sort of thing happened to Tim Robbins, the actor, in NYC. You'd think he was targeted in particular because he's such a pain in the arse, but given your situation, I'd say the process is flawed in many ways. Earlier, the absentee ballots in Palm Beach County, FL were messed up (again).

a LOT of things kind of suck in this country, Jack. let's see if this new president keeps his word and makes some change. some REAL change that's worthwhile. although i have to admit, i'm afraid.

i did get to vote. only had to drive about 2 miles from my house down some country road to a senior center in god-knows-where-land...a line of 3 people ahead of me. nearly didn't bother going coz i knew my vote wouldn't count either, but i voted anyway - just because i didn't feel like listening to my daughter and husband go on about it for ages if i didn't.

i'm surprised we even had the computer voting thingers here! last time we still had those dumb booths that were impossible to figure out. although, when you said your name came up in the system as being registered elsewhere, how did they look that up? did they actually have a computer? LOL all the grannys had at the senior center was a book, and if your name wasn't in it, you didn't vote. it was that simple. i think it's ridiculous that they can deny you the right to vote, a vote is a vote. (my daughter had to come all the way home from college to vote one year and barely made it home on time). i was number 396. they said they had more voters yesterday than ever before at any election.

although, it seems like the popular vote doesn't mean shit anyway. they're saying obama won by more than double (electoral votes) - when according to the people he only won by a slight margin of 51% - 48% (at the time i went to bed). makes no sense to me.

i usually don't even bother voting... just because it's all politics anyway.

JackT - is that the first time comparisons have been drawn between you and Tim Robbins... I mean, we all wanted to bang Susan Sarandon when we saw her nekkid in The Hunger and Rocky Horror Picture Show, but...

Though I'm excited about last night, the real reason to vote is for all the local stuff - these are the things that effect your world the most. Looks like the initiatives in my area are going the way I wanted them, and most of the local races (though tight, some of them) are going the way I wanted, too.
