That's the lowest it can go, right? I mean it can't show a negative balance can it? And why am I still contributing to my 401(k)? Sure it lowers my tax rate, but it's like throwing the money down the toilet.

In essence, you're buying shares in the different investment funds. Right now, by contributing to your 401(k), you're "buying low" - you're getting more value for your money than you were a year ago. I've actually increased my 401(k) contributions.

We're on the downside now but it will get better. And when it does, you'll be there to reap the benefits.

I hope it can't show a negative balance! I can see the letter now: "Congrats on your retirement. There is one small glitch, however. Your 401(k) account shows a negative balance of $150,021.37. Please pay up now. We accept cashiers checks, money orders and credit cards."

Hopefully the market will bounce back ... some day, somehow ... and retirement funds will get a nice, hefty boost. Otherwise .... I don't want to think about that!
