McCain - Palin

Do the Republicans really think picking this particular woman as McCain's running mate will win over disgruntled Hillary supporters - or is that even their intention?

That was definitely part of the calculus in selecting Palin, just as Obama selected Biden to help with the white male vote. As to whether the VP has much effect either way, it usually doesn't seem to. On the other hand, there have been favorable reactions from the embittered PUMA Hillary crowd. Only time will tell, I guess.

FYI, I predicted Palin months ago, and believe it to be, politically, the best possible choice from the field McCain had to work with.

Wow - we really have an election here.

Ok, listening to McCain and Palin - are the Republicans now pro-union? I don't get it. McCain said she took on the oil companies. Palin said her husband is an oil rig worker in a union. I am confused.

Do you think it's a ticket capable of winning the Presidency?

Reagan got to the heart of the unions.
Remember "Reagan Democrats"?

As for oil - she took on Big Oil, but yeah - her husband works for BP, and she's for drilling in ANWR.

Sure, why not? Why wouldn't it?

Well, McCain's already going to have a tough time fighting the "more of the same" argument from the left. Now, he's bringing "change" to the ticket - but the only change she brings is gender.

I'm seeing her NRA card, her fight to have creationism taught in Alaska public schools, and her staunch pro-life stance as three things that will put a wedge between her and moderates.

Well, time will tell. As for the moderates, that's who McCain supposedly plays to. Palin is there to play to the base.

I think its nice that you are concerned that the Republicans made a mistake here.

I'm a little creeped out about her son going to Iraq. And this surprises me. For so long I was thinking these people don't send their own kids - this one goes and the cynic in me thinks, "They want power that bad they'll send their kid as a symbol?"

Reagan was the one who may have saved this country by weakening the union abuse but the pendulum has no swung to the point where people have little job security and retirement looks like a nightmare. I don't call depending on a 401(K) and privatizing social services where the good of the market rather than the good of the people is the main concern something to be a proponent of.

I think that's even a little too cynical for me. Her son joined up a year ago. He's just now being deployed to Iraq.
Biden's son is also going - on October 3rd.

Also, nobody can "send" their kid to Iraq. I guess you could try to demand they go, but I don't know how that would work.

Good point.

So does this end like a Prince HArry thing where they will be more of a target and put their group in greater danger? We don't need another Tillman.

It might end that way, if McCain/Palin win. But they're not going to.
