Happy Birthday Live Aid - BBC4

funny program on last night about the live aid thingy - since its 25 years ago that is.
Interesting too, all behind the scenes and talking heads stuff mainly, harvey fatbloke
goldsmith (who I blame for most of todays eveils, even though that may be a bit irrational) obviously still relishing bob's negotiating technique (effing and blinding natch, but despite the good cause and all that wembley stadium strill wanted their cash), sting saying 'nobody was thinking about enhancing their career' quickly followed by roger taylor saying 'everyone was aware of the career enhancing opportunity', midge ure still sadly bearing a grudge that he appeared to be sidelined, bands moaning that geldof announced that they had agreed before they even knew about the event at all and the americans being generally reluctant, not to mention pissing off geldof with the amopunt of food they consumed at the recording of their single, and the cliffhanger ending (its at least a 2 parter) that the U2s were ready to pull out with a day to go, because they couldn't have a sound check. Watch this space. Or not.

All I remember is the day after we went away on the Sunday to Torridon on a school trip for two weeks. This irritating know-all wanker in our class was proudly showing off a Live Aid t-shirt his brother had bought for him.My mate consumed a carton of juice in the bus after about an hour, complained of feeling sick, then promptly vomited all over the Live Aid t-shirt.It made our fortnight Butler. So stuff the poor and needy -thats the magic of Live Aid to me!

well I missed it, was hoofing it around greece with the then mrs cherry, and greece (or the bits we were in) seemed unaware of what was going on - or maybe it was just me, being, you know, enraptured with mrs C (which I believe I was at the time) and her almost constant state of undress which the islands seemed to require (with me in full englesh blloke abroad regalia - linen suit, panama etc). When we got back her mum had taped the whole lot and she (mrs C, not her mum) was planning on watching the whole lot. A fwe days later their house was robbed and away went the telly, their video and a whole bunch of tapes with large 'live aid' labels. Consequently I didn't see any of it til years later.

Last night there were some interesting comments about the old bands reforming, as I said, partly because Bob had announced that they were without taking the precaution of asking them and coming to the attention of a new audience who suddenly realised that these old farts were actually quite good. The notable exception seemed to be the stones with Jagger squirming bcause Keef was difficult to pin down and then the coupling of mick and dave - about which geldof was fairly disingenuous, but there again, they didn't have to do it did they. I have seen the footage of keef & bob and thats one of those great car crash bits. Waiting to see the U2s interview. The bit they showed last night was bonio in false modesty mode & larry massaging (ego-wise that is). INterested in what they are actually going to say.

Say what you like about U2, but their performance was magnificent that day.
Technically, if the Bunnymen had been there they might have blown away U2,
Queen or just about any band, but in reality many of their live TV appearances
have been a bit shambolic-would they have risen to the occasion?
If the Chameleons UK had put in an appearance it would have been perfect.

did see the second half of this. MOre of the same stuff really and worth a look for the 80s nostalgia value - but focussing on the event itself, confusion reigns etc. Nothing new from the u2s - bonio satrting off all ever so 'umble then going up his arse as usual. freddie mercury being frisky with all the straight blokes back stage - actaully a bono moment there. Apparently fred had him pinned tp othe wall saying how much he enjoyed 'you boys, we think you're very good'. bono goes to adam, he's a bit camp isn't he? whereupon adam points out he's in a band called queen and a little light goes on in the bonio head. myths busted - no bob never said 'give us your fucking money'. it was something else. led zep blamed collins for messing up and he said they were out of it and hadn't rehearsed. madonna, even then, primadonna-ing and wanting the entire backstage cleared so she could go for a poo. Unclear whether midge was really miffed or just philosophical though his girlfriend (annabel croft - well fit posh bird, oh yes) was quite clear on the matter. Though bob did come and find him amongst the crowd for the singalong at the end.

as for the buns non-appearance. funnily enough they never mentioned it. I would hazard a guess that they weren't asked because geldof didn't want them seeing as he seemed to be in total control, or they were just not on his radar. perhaps mac had said something rude about him. cant imagine that can you? whether they would have risen to the occasion? the obvious answer is yes. killing moon with wossname on strings? soaring over the hoards at wemberlee, cool in overcoats, heads down and dry ice swirling in the heat followed by zimbo with a flourish of crocodiles straight into do it clean at the end. Actually there were alot of overcoats courtesy of the spandaus so they wouldn't have been out of place.

Chez.

IS it the special that doesn't talk about the Bunnyment not appearing? Will didn't mince words when talking about it. He said, "They asked us and we were more than happy to say no." They seemed to think it was evil and exploitative much like Morrissey.
I long for the pork of Porcupine. (A slide show dedicated mostly to Will right here.... http://www.examiner.com/rock-music-in-l ... -here-tour)

sorry, should have put my sarcasm alert warning on. of course nobody in the program mentioned that the buns weren'r asked - is that what you mean? As successful pop stars even now they dont discuss others who weren't worth metioning at the time. Its only us on here who ever mention it and probably only us who have heard the not so famous will sergeant quote. does that clarify?

Actually discussion of other people was largely absent, as you might expect, though several did have a few bitchy remarks about le bon yelping like a puppy when he was supposed to be hitting high notes. poor simon.

Morrissey "evil and exploitative"? Maybe.
