Fair use?

Tired of discussing the Bunnymen and all the bands that have been influenced by them? This is the place for you.

Fair use?

Postby Dr Evil » Mon May 10, 2010 3:56 am

I'm not sure if this topic belongs in the Gods Will be Gods section, but once again, what constitutes "fair use" of concert footage-I want to post some, but don't want to see the bands (literally) ripped off. I had permission to film, but am wary of even putting useless very short clips of incomplete new songs on you tube-I need to keep the trust of the bands involved. They seem easy about it, but perhaps they are too young and naive to know the value of the footage.
At the same time, if I don't show a trailer, no-one will believe how great these bands are at the live shows I filmed.

If you bung it up on Youtube, I don't there would be any problems (look at the sheer no of gig footage on there). I guess their record company would be the only one to object and Youtube would then probably pull it. Put it up and see what happens.

Unless they have a webdad/mum running their website, that'd be fun. Then they will write an e-mail complaining about the footage being put up, it gets pulled and then the webdad/mum claims that he/she never wrote the e-mail and, hey presto, it's back up.

The bands have their own promo's on youtube. But nothing like this, and people would want to rip it.

Let' em rip it! It will simply spread the word. You can't win against file share.

I want to see No Distance Left To Run but I am not going to shell out 20 to 30 bucks for something I will watch once.

Thank you China.

It really stinks but until a price is charged that makes me say that is what I feel it is worth (honestly 5 dollars is about what I feel is worth paying instead of watching on youtube) I won't pay.

What about a high quality full HD Blu-Ray with a full sleeve note booklet including unique photos, reviews and interviews? Though no-one will know until my film comes out, these bands and one in particular could piss all over even the early Bunnymen.
Remember when you were obsessed with Mac, as if he really was a superhuman alien brought down to Earth as the second coming to reverse all the decline in rock history? When you see this, you will want the physical product as a holy icon, no matter what the price. Though I suppose the DVD could market at £5.00 I suppose-I don't know what that is in dollars. Blu-Ray could be more expensive, and anyone with the bandwidth to download full 1080p in any reasonable time is going to be too rich to be bothered about the price of a disk.
Of course, I suppose I could just get on with making a cinema movie, at least the punters have to pay to get in, and quad HD is only for millionaires in a domestic setting, at least for now.
If the model for making money from DVD or even Blu-Ray is truly bust, at least when my disk arrives at Jool's door and he gives them a show, they will have the world at their feet regarding sponsorship and live gigs. Get your recorder ready, and prepare for the shock of your life.

From what I learned in music classes, you can't make a profit from the use of it.
I long for the pork of Porcupine. (A slide show dedicated mostly to Will right here.... http://www.examiner.com/rock-music-in-l ... -here-tour)
