Close Call

five years later I'm still the new guy at my job and I'm about to post here when the company president calls me in the office and the other employees are there except for four who are in another office.

I had an idea what was going down just didn't know who it was going down for. My group were the ones who weren't laid off an hour ago. I was just talking the other day about how this economy hasn't affected me and I've been all la-de-da about it but four people who I called friends, drank with, travelled with, made fun of, had them over to my place came in to work this morning with jobs and walked out without one.

It's not in my nature to worry about things and that annoys the missus but consider me officially concerned here.

I know what you are going through. My old job went away about 6 mos. ago. Luckily, I was able to abandon ship before it went down. The job before that, I was laid off (2003) and was out of work for three months. Not fun at all.

My entire department was let go last October, luckily me and the family were already in the process of leaving the country, so everything worked out ok for me. If that wasn't the case I would totally be shitting bricks right now, as I've got two young ones to take care of. My three friends I worked with are all still scrambling for employment still, six month later. It's pretty scary, especially here in the Bay Area/California. Price for everything/taxes keeps going up, but there's less and less jobs everyday.

I truly believe Obama's trying, but is it going to be enough?

Well I don't want to feel too sorry for myself cause at least I'm still employed but latest info is now we get every other Friday off which is a 10% pay cut. But we lost people today who'd been with the company up to 15 years.

I remember the time I had two hours notice I was out of a job. Seven years in and then the owner pulls up with a U-Haul and tells us we're closing up for good. That was fun as me and my friend had newborns, another buddy was paying for a new car and his parent's rent. He was a handy dude to have in a fight and he was crying not knowing how he'd keep his car and keep his parents in their home. It was ugly and the fact we weren't given any notice after years of loyalty made it very hard to stomach.

Well since that day we've been taken out to lunch and today the owners gave the rest of us ipods.

I'm feeling some survivor's guilt here even though my current ipod crapped out two weeks ago.

2gb nano but like I said my 30gb crapped out on me and I was about to spring for another so this will hold me over for a little while. From 5000+ to 421 songs kinda sucks but it was a nice gesture and is very much appreciated.
