Sailing to sadder shores

"Official site"? What is "official site"?
And you know that I'll pick up
Every time you call
Just to thank you one more time

It would seem bunnymen.com is not actually a site.

Are you having withdrawal symptons, bit of depression and general sadness? I think Kounelaki has already tried to cheer you up, but here we go:

So clue me in. When one moves their server, what exactly happens?

And how big is a server? Is it really small enough to fit under his bed?

I know they can fool Mac on the technology, but I would have thought Will would be wise to this bullshit (from the newsletter announcing the new server):

"will let us keep up to speed with current & future web developments to be undertaken over the next couple of years it also means more excitingly we will have have complete freedom, unlimited creativity, capable of broadcasting live video performances & interviews, even richer media and lots more very exciting projects."

What a load of crap.

My firefox browser says "Unable to connect"

"Problem loading the page"

    - Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at bunnymen.com.
    - If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
    - If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
    - Firefox says stop looking at bunnymen.com; nothing has changed since you looked at it two months ago.
    - Firefox says that seeing this message page is about as interesting as it may get.

Try again

only a day or 2. why is everyone ina tizzy?
(especially since no one 'goes there anyway')

quote from newsletter:

Over the next 7 days you might notice loss of service from the
Official Echo & The Bunnymen website, Bunnymen.com (will not effect
the forum). For the last two months a team of testers have been
working on the website 'testing' to check the performance of the
website on our own server, basically this all part of a huge new
project that will let us keep up to speed with current & future web
developments to be undertaken over the next couple of years it also
means more excitingly we will have have complete freedom, unlimited
creativity, capable of broadcasting live video performances &
interviews, even richer media and lots more very exciting projects.
The easiest way to look at it is to say we are not paying a mortgage
anymore to a hosting company, we have bought the house.
Bunnymen.com will be in attendance at this years very prestigious
Best Of Manchester Awards 08 hosted by Peter Saville, Miranda Sawyer,
Caroline Elleray (Head of A&R at Universal Music Publishing) & Luke
Bainbridge (Observer Music Monthly) in recognition of Bunnymen.com
being an official entry.
You might be asking yourself "but are the bunnymen not from
Liverpool?", yes they are but the website is produced from the bands
Manchester (Chorlton Cum Hardy) offices, more details can be found
here: http://www.urbis.org.uk/page.asp?id=3093
A full report will follow after the awards.
We hope you all enjoyed the first Lancashire HotPod Podcast from Will
Sergeant, if you have not yet seen it "WHY NOT" check it out in the
Fans section on the website, we would love to hear what you think.
pfft!

It's sort of like a change of address, in postal terms. Every server has an address. When you change servers, you're basically saying I want all requests for www.website.com to go to the new address instead of the old one. Like the post office, it takes a couple days for things to catch up, and for a while, the requests for www.website.com try to go to the old address. In this case, however, it's like the new house hasn't been built (the new server isn't yet online). Therefore, the requests go nowhere, because the new address doesn't exist yet. Typically, the operators of a website will duplicate the content from the old server to the new one. So, when the the requests start going to the new address, there's something there.

In The Margins wrote:And how big is a server? Is it really small enough to fit under his bed?
Servers are computers. In fact, many small low-traffic websites run off peoples' home computers. If you have more traffic or have any sort of streaming content, you have to have more processor power, more storage space, and higher bandwidth connection, allowing for more people to connect to and interact with your site at the same time. Most people opt for 3rd party hosts - companies whose sole purpose is to house websites and maintain the computers the content is stored on. The problem with hosted servers - there are generally limitations to the amount of bandwidth you use. Streaming content can effect that hugely. The podcast for example is 400mb. if 100 people watched or downloaded that, that's 40gb of data transfer. It adds up quick. And if you use too much bandwidth, you get overage charges. There's a big risk in self-hosting, as you now have to maintain the computer itself. If the connection to the computer doesn't have enough bandwidth, people can't connect to it or that connection will be slow. If the computer can't handle the number of people attempting to access the content, it can crash. If there's nobody there to monitor this, then it's dead until they can get back to it.

What a load of crap.

Perhaps nobody onboard knows what's required to execute something like this. I'd hope they at the very least hired a professional consultant to guide them through the purchase and installation of a reliable server, and that they've got access to a mega-broadband connection, not just home cable or dsl. Home cable and dsl connections will have the same sort of usage restrictions that a server host will have, and you can be subject to cancellation, disconnection or overage charges.

Check out this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_server for more info (tips a hat to JackT)
