Servers are computers. In fact, many small low-traffic websites run off peoples' home computers. If you have more traffic or have any sort of streaming content, you have to have more processor power, more storage space, and higher bandwidth connection, allowing for more people to connect to and interact with your site at the same time. Most people opt for 3rd party hosts - companies whose sole purpose is to house websites and maintain the computers the content is stored on. The problem with hosted servers - there are generally limitations to the amount of bandwidth you use. Streaming content can effect that hugely. The podcast for example is 400mb. if 100 people watched or downloaded that, that's 40gb of data transfer. It adds up quick. And if you use too much bandwidth, you get overage charges. There's a big risk in self-hosting, as you now have to maintain the computer itself. If the connection to the computer doesn't have enough bandwidth, people can't connect to it or that connection will be slow. If the computer can't handle the number of people attempting to access the content, it can crash. If there's nobody there to monitor this, then it's dead until they can get back to it.In The Margins wrote:And how big is a server? Is it really small enough to fit under his bed?

"will let us keep up to speed with current & future web developments to be undertaken over the next couple of years it also means more excitingly we will have have complete freedom, unlimited creativity, capable of broadcasting live video performances & interviews, even richer media and lots more very exciting projects."
What a load of crap.
