Which festival would that be, LF?

That's as good an alternative as it can get. I went to the Haldern festival in 2005 and 2006 and had an excellent time on both occasions. Especially 2006 when they had the Guillemots, James Dean Bradfield, the Divine Comedy and Ed Harcourt all in one day.

LF (kleine wereld by the way!), if you're involved with the arrangements, can't you still try to get the Bunnymen to perform on the festival on the 8th or the 9th..?

I could... I'll see what I can do! 2005-6 were magic years. Especially Ed Harcourt with JDB backing him, and the MIGHTY British Sea Power wrecking the Spiegel Tent. Very embarrassing that was ;)

Its teh 25th anniversary btw. Flaming Lips the Thursday night

I really wanted to see British Sea Power that night, but the day had exhausted me too much to still try and get up that late. But I was there when JDB walked on stage to play maracas for Ed Harcourt (I think 'Born in the 70's'), which was a highlight indeed!

Haldern 2005 had the Kaiser Chiefs, the Coral and Saybia as highlights for me. In 2006 I also enjoyed the Zutons and some Danish new-wave band called Utah. The Guillemots have become my fave British band to emerge from the UK in the last ten years or so. But on that festival day it was especially the Divine Comedy who gave a magnificent performance. Neil Hannon was very witty and entertaining and they had a very strong setlist.

If I had a time machine I would have liked to visit some of the Halderns before I was aware of the festival!
Last year's headliners didn't convince me to go, though, and there's not much in this year's programme that draws me yet... but the best bands in 2006 were also added a month before the festival weekend so you never know!

Good luck with the arrangements, Fusileer!

Ta! Haldern's special...
That BSP gig is in my top 5 of all time. The bulb fight was classs! The stage was utterly wrecked.

THere's a good (nay cast iron) chance of the line up at Haldern 2008 containing some very big surprises, it is their 25th anniversary year after all.

Last year was great but it was the usual thing; all teh best performances were from stuff you wouldnt normally expect to bother watching (Duke Special were incredible as were Tunng)

If you're ever down the Bonte Koe I'll stand you a drink, I'm the tall loud Englishman with teh blonde chic girlfriend

It was a great gig. The sound was excellent and so was the band performance.
Ian's voice was -at least- as good as ever.
I think the Siberia tour setlist was slightly longer and better, but
still... no complaints really! Except that this was the only time I've seen
them without Ocean Rain on the set. But we did get a superb rendition of
People Are Strange instead, which I hadn't heard live before. And we got
those two new songs, which sounded really good.

Setlist:

Rescue
Villiers Terrace
Show Of Strength
Stormy Weather
Seven Seas
Dancing Horses
Forgotten Fields
The Disease
All That Jazz
Never Stop
Think I Need It Too
Back Of Love
Killing Moon
The Cutter
---
People Are Strange
Nothing Lasts Forever
---
Lips Like Sugar

Me and my friends still got to speak to Ian afterwards. He seemed to
recognize me and he was in a great mood; very happy, friendly and witty. At
one point I said that I thought Never Stop had been one of the highlights of
tonight. He then said: "It wasn't, but thanks anyway!". Then I said that
Show Of Strength was another highlight, and one of my friends said that it
was Seven Seas, and the other said Nothing Lasts Forever, and some other
people mentioned other songs, so then I said: "Come to think about it, I
think all of the songs were the highlights!" He smiled and we then got to
wave the whole band goodbye as they drove off. Except for Will, though, who
was nowhere to be seen then.

Oh, and Ian said some stuff to us about the Albert Hall gig next mont...
some BIG non-Ocean Rain surprises may be coming up! And he made a point out
of his smoking habit himself; he actually admitted that his voice 'went
through thousands of cigarettes' some years ago and that things will be
different and better now. So we can now even more eagerly anticipate the RAH
gig!
