Mac interview in Record Collector

Postby Dave Smith » Mon Jun 23, 2014 6:00 am

Another bizarre read. .
On drugs. ...he's not clean but getting closer.Hopes his daughters don't read it
On Lorraine. ..still calls her the Mrs much to the interviewers surprise
On meteorites. ...its better than the Velvets loaded
On the 80 s.....everyone was shit. Including talking heads
On Bowie....He said mac was shaggable
On losing his voice. ...He smoked 100 fags before the Broudie concert then it went
Etc etc
Interviewer well pissed off at the end after "listening to him talk about himself for two hours"

Oh and my pledge still hasn't arrived

If journalists don't know what to expect when they interview Mac these days they deserve all they get.

“It’s funny, the other day I did a thing with Ian Broudie [a concert tribute to the producer-writer- performer] and I must have smoked about 100 ciggies in two days and then me voice went,” he says with a throaty laugh. “It wasn’t the singing, it was the smoking.”

What a knob, I'm sure his chain smoking had absolutely nothing to do with him losing his voice and scrapping all the original Meteorites tour dates.

Funny? I'm sure all those left out of pocket due to the cancelled gigs think it's bloody hilarious.

Never bought that magazine before and not sure I would again. That's a fairly badly written article - you'd think in a magazine called 'record collector' he'd focus on something of that nature - the article on Track Records, for example, is little more than a list of singles and albums, and sales figures year by year, with a bit padding (e.g. if you want the rare Live at Leeds the text on fake stamp on the front is in black, not blue or red) that fails to raise the interest level above, wow, that's an intersting numbering system. Still its hard not to think of Mac as even more delusional, and given the furory about mentioning the D word on the forum a few years ago suprisingly candid about it all. Its kind of vague whether the interviewer just let Mac ramble and then picked the nuttiest bits or the questions are not inserted but he actaully probed this stuff. Personally I preferred his songwriting when he was, as he refers to himself, a metaphysical twat.

The whole egocentric Mac the Mouth bit was charming in his 20s and 30s but in his 50s, not so much.

I'm sorry to say that he comes across as a bit of a delusional knob these days.

delusional seems the most appropriate word. Not sure how he can slag off the lyrics to HUH and then say he's addressing personal issues (or whatever) with worrds like come on down to th emarket town, come on down etc. And now he's actually bragging about how many toots he's had over the years.

5 Things I've Learned From Listening To Meteorites:

1. If a garden has weeds it needs weeding.
2. Apparently it's quite chilly in Constantinople.
3. Explosions can blow holes in the ground.
4. If I visit a market town it's quite likely I won't come back alive.
5. ?

Actually I've only learnt 4 things ...

Used to buy it every month years ago, spent hours trawling through the records for sale list at the back written in tiny print. Was warned that reading too much of certain magazines would affect my eyesight but didn't think Record Collector was one of them.

i can imagine it going to court and the defence bloke saying "Mr Smith, were you previously aware that Mr McCulloch smokes cigarettes", and you saying "errrr", at which point he does that pretending to be tetchy thing they always do and interrupting you "mr Smith, how many times have you seen Mr McCulloch perform on stage with his band, the echo and his bunnymen",and you saying "3000" or whatever, and then him sitting down, resting his case, as it were. Not that its not a bummer. I was a bit miffed just going across town and missing half of it because they went on early.
