I was disappointed to learn that The Bunnymen would not tour here in the US in 2012, wanting to catch them again on either the east or west coast. Hope was renewed when Ian scheduled a solo tour at a few clubs around the US in March, only to be dashed when he cancelled it, leaving me short a number of unrefunded dollars. I can live with that. So this could be a year I don’t get to see them and groove to their music. Come join me.
I will instead have to be satisfied with the occasional bootleg recording of one of their shows. Exactly a year ago Ian, Will and the rest of the band were making their way across the country, satisfying all those that showed up (well maybe not everyone who showed up at the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA). To help us all through this current drought of music, I share with you my recording of their May 21, 2011 show at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA. Sometime probably next weekend, late in the night I’ll light up a cigar, have a shot of tequila and groove to the music, pretending I am standing there again, bathed in purple and blue light.
I want to comment on one thing that sticks out in my mind about this show. No, it’s not getting the recording equipment into Club Nokia which uses metal detectors. No it’s not Ian scolding a member of the audience for referring to the best song ever written as “Ocean fucking Rain.” It was a particular jerk who stood in front of me, at the barricade in front of the stage. Some 50+, balding, eye glassed, mustached stiff. You know the type, the person who stands in front of you, best seat in the house and they may as well be asleep when this rocking music is playing. Well I was feeling real good and dancing to the music, but I stumbled when I lost my footing on the uneven edge of the base that supports the barricade. I immediately apologized, no harm intended (I believe you can hear me on the recording). Instead I get this pissed off look and response, he fearing I’m going to steal his place. If he’s a VT member and is reading this, the asshole knows who he is and what I think. No more shows for you. Next time The Bunnymen perform in LA, hang out in the back where you’ll have plenty of room, where no one will violate you personal space and leave the mosh pit in front of the stage for the real fans. If we meet again, that time I’ll be sure to do it Liverpool style and push you aside like a bug to get in the front line at any cost. Even the guys in Liverpool try doing it with a smile.
