The Fantastical Adventures of Echo and the Bunnymen

Postby girlwithnoname » Wed Apr 18, 2012 5:57 pm

We have had happy and neutral threads about the Bunnymen, but now, we have imaginative! Relate a story or anecdote about the Bunnymen that isn't even slightly true. You know you have one.

The members of Echo and the Bunnymen, overjoyed at their success with their 1987 album in the United States, eagerly worked on their next album, which went triple platinum there. The subsequent world tour was a wild success, leading to international fame and fortune beyond their most fervent dreams.

A packed out Wembley Stadium went wild as lead singer Ian McCulloch belted out "The Cutter" and other hit tunes. The set on 13 July 1985, broadcast to more than one billion people worldwide, will be forever considered the career breakthrough for Echo & The Bunnymen with a stomping 14-minute version of "The Killing Moon" followed up by other gems like "Villiers Terrace", "Do It Clean" and "Back of Love" before finishing with an impromptu cover of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side."

The event organisers, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, were delighted that they had opted for Echo & The Bunnymen after briefly considering and rejecting Irish band U2 for the slot. The now obscure U2 never reached the dizzy heights of the Bunnymen but are still touring, having recently supported Howard Jones, Bananarama, Limahl, A Flock of Seagulls and Bucks Fizz on their recent Here and Now Tour around the UK. Boosted by their legendary performance in 1985, the Bunnymen have gone on to sell millions of records and their lead singer, affectionately known as Mac, is now an ambassador for the United Nations and a dedicated champion of human rights issues.

That thread was before girlwithnoname was born. It's time for the young folks to take the reigns Jack.

These young kids need to know their history.

From history, Jack, I see that the original topic was something else, and the thread meandered in this direction. THIS thread is dedicated to a re-invention, if you will, of a past Bunnymen history in an alternate universe.

I did especially like the part about Will and Mac parachuting into North Korea.

Yep, that's a good one. I don't remember that thread though. Very similar to one my warped mind came up with about the fans being sent on a secret gig on the moon. In the spirit of Glasnost and because he liked the imagery in the Porcupine - An Atlas Adventure promo video, Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev invited the band in 1985 to be sent by Soyuz rocket to the moon to play Ocean Rain in its full entirety. Unfortunately, the Soviets had never completed a moon programme and had no means of recovering the band or the fans that had gone, having entered a competition for tickets through the official Bunnymen fan club. Luckily, the band were able to return to the earth because of Mac's special powers, fixing a harness round his neck and flying seated on his back like Bastian Bux on Falkor the luckdragon in The Neverending Story film. Sadly though the fans were left marooned on the moon and died when the oxygen ran out in their space suits.

I'm still waiting for my ticket for that gig. Was Ivan meant to post them?

Think that was a bit later. The Bunnymen didn't even have a website back then as the interwebs were still to be invented. But I remember well watching Top of the Pops showing a video of Les, Pete and Will on the back of Mac, flying among the stars with Limahl's irritating face appearing in soft focus in the background mouthing the words "Turn around, look at what you see. In her face, the mirror of your dreams" to a catchy synth-laden tune.

I don't have one creative writing bone in my body, but this thread is genius. I'm going to sit this one out and just relish what everyone else posts.

This shall remain a favourite of mine: http://mirror.uncyc.org/wiki/Echo_%26_the_Bunnymen

Does anyone here know who wrote it maybe?...

The posts don't necessarily have to be elaborate:

Upon releasing Heaven Up Here, the Bunnymen decided to diversify into crime-fighting. With Mac's Microphone of Mayhem and Will's Sonic Guitar of Justice, supervillians across the world were defeated one by one.

1. Ian McCulloch has no real nose

2. Will had joined a guerilla fighting organisation called the Happy Death Men in his past

3. Pete did actually get to talk to the aliens, and is now on their planet.

4. The Mighty Boosh was Mac and Will's idea, but they got other actors to do it. They don't talk about it because they weren't pleased with the result.

Would think of more completely false bios later!
