Buxton Opera House

Postby Dave Smith » Sun Feb 19, 2012 7:01 pm

Great hotel called the Palace informed me that myself and my girlfriend had been upgraded to the suite for free..not bad and breakfast was top notch the next day.Sorry to the guy in the lift we shared with a flowers t-shirt on for not saying more if you come on here. Also a foreign guy in reception this morning checking out??Anyway after brief snowstorm to the gig at the beautiful opera house.Band come on to blistering Back of Love followed by Do It Clean. We get Villiers,Pride,My Kingdom,Stormy,Bed Bugs,7C's etc.Mac is in a good -ish mood despite feedback,Will is playing a (very loud) blinder.Bit of a mid-set lull with Fountain and Rust being too close together and Mac's voice is getting a bit raspy. He gets a bit narky but not too bad.Brilliant vibrant Horses and Cutter end the set.
Then to a straight NLF and a pysched-out Lips entering Spritualized territory in the ad-lib bit-fucking ace.Sad no further encore and crowd a bit stiff but hey it is an opera house with a 90 year old security guard!Overall-bit lower key than Leamington but a solid 7/10.See you at the barricades babe(again)

Went for a curry opposite after the gig.Noticed some pictures of 'stars' on the wall with one of the waiters.Jim Davidson,John Virgo,Uri Geller(bent spoon behind bar),Vikki Michelle and some of emmerdale. Was informed by said waiter I was the only person EVER to recognise Vikki Michelle.Freud?

Spot on review Dave. Cutter was a highlight as always along with Do It Clean and Villiers for me. Felt a bit odd sitting in the gods but worked out fine as I had my six year old sleeping on my knee by 9.40 (it was The Fountain wot did it, honest - I'll have to put it on a loop in his bedroom of an evening). The audience were a bit muted where we were sat, definitely quieter than the Liverpool crowds.
Great hotel, we got the flat at the top of the Old Hall lower down from the venue (beautiful Opera House), bloody massive and great food. Went for a walk in the morning, noticed many of the locations from Shine So Hard in the Pavilion grounds but didn't have the balls to ask for two Fabs in the tea rooms.
Lovely place and a good, solid gig.
Purveyor of the 'semi-predictable one-liner (which) embodies the essence of the type of comedic crap we grew to love here. VB is a crazy fool'

yep, good gig, beautiful venue, I thought set list was a good mix, would have loved Over the Wall and Ocean Rain to top it off....Had to drive through bad but thankfully short blizzard on way and hubby said what the hell have you got us into now as blizzard was in a very remote spot and had to slow down to about 10 mph.....nice to see Buxton Pavilion with snow on ground like video (saddo I know)..... didn't see any Fab lollies but quite a few Bettys (plural use ok!) working in Opera House :-)

Our hotel was The Buckingham just opposite venue.....it was a bit quirky.... with floral wallpaper and loads of pics of Clint Eastwood around the room... and then when we got back to our room after breakfast there was a Grim Reaper beer mat stuck to our door
and a Pagan witches symbol beer mat stuck to the door opposite!! Glad we saw those after we had slept not before!! Met Gordie in breakfast room in morning....

(there was a small bit of Mac's Lift Me Up too)

you didn't sound that tall when you were on the radio. So being swedish I presume she finds the old midlands accent alluring? S'alright I'm from Leeds so not having a go about accents. And though its none of my business, does she mind mac' portrait watching her have tea?
