Sad. There used to be a time when the Bunnymen live was a religious experience.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Yup. Tho fairly crowded show. Not sold out, but fairly packed. Good show, tho the knock knock joke surfaced again. Mac very talkative. And for once, understandable. Smoked several cigarettes. Pretty raspy. Second set better than the first, tho there was the seemingly requisite flubs on Turquoise Days. Will's guitar was wonderful. There were a goodly number of hipsters/young'uns in the crowd. On to Anaheim.

Wow. Dunno what to say. Wish I could rewind the Anaheim show. Bet Mac does too.

After a fine set by Kelley Stoltz, the Bunnymen came on late, due to technical difficulties (at least that was the rumor). Mac kept dropping lyrics during the first set, and during Nothing Lasts Forever, shouted at two very chatty girls in the front row ... got a handler (Peter, maybe? tall, skinny guy with glasses and a goatee) to have a word with them ... musta pissed him off plenty, tho, cuz he cut out Walk on the Wild and segued directly into the liverpool bit ... Then another L-O-N-G break before the second set ... more monkeying around with mics, etc. Finally, they came on again ... and kicked off on a roaring second set ... tho with more dropped lyrics ... and then, at the end of Heaven Up Here (the song) Mac just stalked offstage, followed by the band. WTF??? ... After another long wait, Will walked back out, addressed the crowd, then left ... couldn't understand what he said, tho ... too many people were yelling .... Then, after another long wait, the band came back on and Mac announced they were going to do some fan favorites ... Killing Moon and Lips Like Sugar. And that was it.

Pretty bizarro show, tho it wasn't all bad ... the hired guns sounded great ... and Will's playing was fantastic. As to Mac, dunno if he was drunk/hopped up/in a bad mood/exhausted after a day at Disneyland or if his back was killing him (he kept grabbing at it) or what, but I wish he'd get his sh*t together.

They were so good Saturday night in L.A., and then this. Like night and day. I really wish I'd skipped Anaheim. To top it off, I got lost in Orange County after the show, trying to find the 5 freeway (very poor signage). And since they gypped me out of 5 songs, I think I'm entitled to a partial refund. Think I'll get it?

Only five songs short? Did I tell you the one about the night we had a mere six minutes of Morrissey?

Yeah, but that's Morrissey! He's a total prima donna ... oh, wait ...

For a minute there last night, I wondered if I was witnessing the Bunnymen's version of the night the Jesus and Mary Chain broke up onstage at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip.

Haha! That happened to me at an Eric Clapton concert once. His drug use, at the time, caught up with him, I guess + he had to leave the stage after something like 2 songs. He never came back.

Thanks for the very detailed review! I don't feel so bad that I missed it now.

That's a significantly better excuse than the Mozzer's moist quiff.

zabird, thanks for the reviews...sorry to hear about the Anaheim gig. At least Saturday's show was good.

Thanks! And Will's magnificent playing made up some for Mac's less than stellar performance and that disturbing, abrupt ending. Ah well. Maybe the memory will have faded by the time they hit L.A. again.

Will sounded GREAT at the Warfield, too. Best-sounding live guitar I've ever heard, and I've been to a LOT of shows.

Definitely! I parked myself right in front of him for the L.A. show and just watched his playing ... oh, of course I watched Mac too ... who wouldn't? ... but I loved watching Will at work. And some of the stuff I thought must be Mac on the records, Will was playing live ... tho I suppose he could have added some of Mac's parts when Mac "retired" as a Bunnymen guitarist.

I hate douchebag, no nothing reviewers who say the Bunnymen's back catalogue has held up "surprisingly well".

What the fuck are you on about? Surprisingly well? The Bunnymen's first four albums had nothing to do with the 80's and are just as exciting today as they were back then.

Suprisingly well. What a fucking moron.
