Disgusting Sax Solo in Villiers Terrace

Postby DivaDiana77 » Tue Dec 01, 2009 3:59 am

How in hell did THIS happen and boy are we glad it wasn't ever repeated. Now I don't mind a nice sax solo so long as it's Haircut 100, Orange Juice or Spandau Ballet. But this made me want to hurl.

That was done for a UK Channel Four thing called Play at Home in the 80s with the tracks (Seven Seas, All You Need Is Love, The Killing Moon, Stars Are Stars and Villiers Terrace) being released in 1984 on ep - some of the tracks later reappeared again on the Crystal Days box set. They are actually quite good and show the band trying different things, although Mac sings Stars Are Stars badly out of tune. In there are bongos, sax, clarinet, cello, bass, guitars and harpsicord. I actually really like the version of Villiers Terrace with no sick in sight. Great bass line at the beginning that then kicks into the song.

Hey, I loved their Play at Home episode. It's part of the Bunnymen legend. From what I remember, most of the other bands just did a straight gig recording and interviews and the Bunnymen came up with this, classic. If you can get hold of a copy, have a look at the whole thing, its pure Bunnymen.

I was expecting a more spicy video, I thought the heading was "Disgusting Sex Solo in Villiers Terrace".

Actually, that is my favorite version of the song.

Is this footage from the pizza joint?

Watching that video though shows how much health & safety has changed since the 1980s. They even used to employ children or midgets as cooks back then. Bet the greasy spoon snack bar didn't even require a live musical performance licence from the local council either.

The film itself looks really dated nowadays, I suppose we're just getting old.

I have seen parts of it. It's like here are the Bunnymen lounging around your large house, sitting in the living room, on the stairs and in the window. Going out of tune, well, worse things have happened to Mac, we know this about him. Some vocal training would have fixed that. He went out of tune on Silver on the la-la part because he tried to do it an octave up. It's outrageously high if you do that. Yeah, pretty cool in that light.
But still, sax solo? Blech.

This is the Life At Brian's thing, right? Classic versions of classic songs. Those versions of Villiers Terrace and The Killing Moon are among my favorites.

Never saw the video before. Love Ian's red lipstick and the lady's hairdo.

Well, I guess I know how it happened now. I still don't like the sax solo, but I did enjoy the rest.

You're not the only one patiently waiting for those Carrie Prejean sex solo videos to be released.
