The Singles and EPs

Postby Sick4Tunz » Tue Nov 17, 2009 12:03 am

This past Saturday night I had the pleasure of listening to several of the Bunnymen's singles and EPs - I Want To Be There When You Come (1997), World Tour EP (1997), Rust (1999), It's Alright (2001), etc., all found on scattered websites. It's all brand new to me. I loved the collection of live performances, radio edits and unusual "mixes" (Rescue, the Mindwinder's Remix). Familiar songs played in unfamiliar ways. And the way they turned Ian's voice into this dreamy sound. I could not get enough of it, sounding so heavenly (the tequila and standing outside in the snow at 11,000 feet at midnight had nothing to do with it).

Are there any particular favorites of yours? Which singles/EPs include a song or two of this dreamy sound? Where can I find more of this sweet stuff? Recommendations?

Mr. Brian, you've got the best discography on the web. A great reference tool.

We all admire Mr Brians tool
Mr. Brian, I find that offensive.

Scouser's inability to se others' point of view is rather grating.

The infection spreads. Another stash of music found. My wallet is a bit lighter. Inches towards overload.

Thanks. I've actually added some things in the new one I am working on. So far there are 317 separate entries with artwork and it will combine the lyrics and tabs into the discography. It's taking up quite a bit of my time getting this all into a SQL database and parsing it out correctly with PHP since I've never done this before. The current discography is just static HTML pages and you can't do anything like just list all the solo stuff or just the singles or soundtracks and things like that. It's just 4 big lists basically and some of it not too well organized. Hopefully I get as much as I want done before my new job starts.

As far as some of my favorites. Off the top of my head...Fish Hook Girl is one you need to find. It is a WAYGTDWYL b-side, but don't let that fool you, it's more like an Electrafixion song. That's probably why it landed as a b-side. Too bad this one will always be lost to the ages. It would sound great live.

I also enjoyed the Lo-Fi Lullaby remix of A Promise that came out as a b-side of one of the Flowers singles. People talk about wanting Glide meets Bunnymen. Well there it is. At the time there was talk of more mixes like that of old songs. I don't know if they were ever done and not released or just never done.

Amazon has some of these songs available as mp3 downloads. (Hint, hint.)

A Promise (Lo-Fi Lullaby) is available as an mp3 download on that b-side and live compilation

I don't think that FHG is available on anything but the single. They didn't even include it on the box set.
It looks like it can be picked up pretty cheap used ($1.99) here. That listing does not show a track list but it is on the Rust CD1 single (the one with just Ian on the cover)

Some of the b-sides can also be heard over de interweb there. I think Rhapsody streams B-Sides And Live (2001 - 2005) in its full entirety, but that's only available in the States - that includes A Promise (Lo Fi Lullabye) that Mr Brian was on about + Marble Towers and Scratch The Past, which are good tracks as well. Certainly would add The Fish Hook Girl to your collection.

Be sure to check out the Nothing Lasts Forever singles. B-sides include Polly, Hurracaine, Colour Me In and Watchtower. Good stuff.

Colour Me In and Watchtower certainly. I thought Hurracaine was the extra track for the Japanese Evergreen, but never appeared as a b-side. It was on the Crystal Days box set though.

The NLF b-sides can be heard on We7 (http://www.we7.com/#/artist/Echo-And-Th ... de=release) if it works in the US. Notice The Fountrain is up on there in its full entirety as well now.

They played Fish Hook Girl on the WAYGTDWYL tour. They also broke out the Electrafixion song, Burned, a few times. They haven't been so flexible with a setlist since.

So that's what it was! I had not heard Burned back then and remember a song being played during the WAYGTDWYL? gig that I attended that I didn't recognise at all.

Could be, but they didn't play it often. You might be thinking of the Iggy song, Loose. They played that a lot on that tour.

I just checked out Loose when you mentioned it. Yeah, it might have been that.

Thanks all for the good suggestions, some of which I have already managed to find. I went digging tonight and found another handful of singles, Bunnymen and Electrafixion, with what appear to be interesting variations of their songs. If their music were available in liquid form, you'd find me with a needle in my arm.
