Rumor?

Wow. Man. That sucks for the band and the fans that wanted to hear the same set list from the last six years.

To the IRS? That usually means "We didn't do the paper work correctly last time so we will blame the IRS."

The management is truly fucked and fucking the band. Of course, every other band in the world can do it.

Here guys maybe this will help alleviate the burden:
This list is not comprehensive, but it will get you thinking along the right track. The following expenses may be deductible for artists who treat their music as a business:

1. Instruments / supplies / mics / amps / etc.
2. Recording equipment
3. Studio rental fees
4. CD production costs
5. Travel expenses for getting to your gigs
6. Your van / bus / etc., and related expenses, if you tour
7. Hotel rooms if you tour
8. 1/2 of your meal expenses while on tour
9. Fees paid to your manager / publicist / booking agent / lawyer / etc.
10. Promotional expenses (flyers, business cards, merch you give away, etc.)
11. Rental fees for equipment you didn’t buy
12. Parking / tolls / and other travel expenses for shows
13. Gifts to industry professionals (up to $25 is deductible)
14. Music business books / directories (or other books / software you need to manage your band’s business)
15. Copyright and trademark fees (for your songs and band name) if they’re registered

Here's more info. This actually sounds reasonable (without any actual verification from a tax expert).

"They say that the IRS has some rule that bands needed to pay a lot of the money if they already toured here within 30 days. Due to this unforeseen restriction, Echo can no longer make their upcoming tour work ..."

But they will tour in 2010.

So they fucked up and did not know the tax laws. But will blame the IRS.

Just be adults and say you failed to understand the tax laws. Who does?

I wonder if this rule applies only to foreign bands touring the U.S.?

and this from the AV Club blog, via BOF:

Thanks to a new IRS rule that would claim a shocking 30 percent of their show profits, Echo & The Bunnymen have canceled their upcoming U.S. tour, according to a statement from the band's publicist. The tour was set to begin Nov. 15 in Atlanta.

It's too bad, but maybe a spring tour will give them the opportunity to extend the tour beyond the 15 dates they had lined up. I'm kind of irritated that they didn't know about this tax rule before booking the dates so close to the OR dates.

How many OR dates did they just play? It didn't quite seem like a "tour"

I wonder if " toured within 30 days" means counting the days from the 1st OR show in Oct, or the last one at the Nokia to the 1st U.S. scheduled Nov. show?

Why does the GD IRS allow people to get paid thousands to have TV commercials filmed in their houses and not have to report ANY of it to the govt., but there's this law?

i don't know why they couldn't have just said it was part of the same tour... they just went home for a few weeks in between.

it would have been nice to know of these problems sooner than 2 wks before the tour starts. people have flights/hotels... not all of which will be refundable. this sucks.

:frown:

i was looking forward to the show and seeing my friends.

I can squeeze deductions out of a dry bone, but am not qualified to do other people's taxes.

I think nowadays we just know way more about what's going on and expect to because of the immediacy of social networking. Who's responsible?
I have to say it stinks. I was planning to try to catch them in Chicago and saw that it wasn't there on ticketmaster. That tipped me off that something was amiss.

We really do have wacko tax laws. Don't know if anyone remembers,. but Duran Duran ended up running off to Sri Lanka as tax exiles early on in their careers.
I long for the pork of Porcupine. (A slide show dedicated mostly to Will right here.... http://www.examiner.com/rock-music-in-l ... -here-tour)

I bet there could have been some technical way around it.... tax-wise? And like Blinkilite said, they should have just not went home; it was only a few weeks between.

Well this is too bad no matter what the reason. I was warming up to the idea of seeing them in Chicago right before Thanksgiving and visiting an old friend as well.
