So there I was watching the Liverpool Legends Hillsborough charity footy match on the telly last night when, right at the end, who should they wheel out to lead the players and crowd in a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone but our very own Ian McCulloch. My toes have never curled so much - he took the mic, muttered about it being "the greatest honour of my life" or something, it was hard to tell, wandered around in a circle (?) then proceeded to "sing" almost inaudibly the first couple of lines over a backing track of Gerry and The Pacemakers. He then handed the mic to a couple of kids in the crowd who sounded like Orville The Duck on acid. They were still better than Mac though.
Maybe he was overcome with emotion or maybe he was just pissed, I just wish he'd stayed in the stands. Very embarrassing.
I love these comments on an LFC fansite:
"That guy with the mic who was meant to be singing ynwa, who the hell was he? He didnt really wanna be there did he?"
"Dunno, he looked like a tramp they picked up from the streets."
"That Mike Read is a shite singer"
Well done Mac.
