Michael Lee, the drummer most famous for his work with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page in the 1990s, has died aged 39.

Lee passed away earlier this week - November 24 or 25, according to conflicting reports - and the circumstances or causes of his death are currently unknown.

The drummer first worked with Robert Plant on his 1993 solo album "Fate Of Nations", before playing with the singer and Jimmy Page on their 1994 set "No Quarter: Jimmy Page And Robert Plant Unledded".

Lee also performed on the duo's Steve Albini-produced follow-up, 1998's "Walking Into Clarksdale".

He also played with The Cult, Echo And The Bunnymen and the reformed Thin Lizzy during his career.

Michael Lee
Drummer | 1969 - 2008
World-class drummer who played with Led Zep's Page & Plant, The Cult and the re-formed Thin Lizzy

Michael Lee, who died at the age of 39 on Monday 24 November, 2008, had played with some of the best in the rock music business.

He was invited by Robert Plant - of Led Zeppelin fame - to work on the 1993 Fate of Nations album and the world tour of the same name.

He was born Michael Gary Pearson on 19 November, 1969.

When Plant regrouped with former Led Zeppelin co-star Jimmy Page as Page and Plant in the mid '90s, Plant brought Lee into that band. He played on Unledded and the No Quarter album.

Plant was so impressed with Lee that when he recorded the Walking Into Clarksdale album with Page, Lee is credited as a co-writer on every song.

Most recently Michael Lee had toured with Jeff Martin and played drums on Jeff's new solo album, Exile and the Kingdom.

The impressive list of bands and artists that Lee played with includes: ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Guns 'N' Roses, Lenny Kravitz, the re-formed Thin Lizzy, and Echo and the Bunnymen.

He also performed with The Cult founders Billy Duffy and Ian Astbury on their Ceremony tour

Now we're without the second best Bunnymen drummer ever.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

no, Simon was the 2nd best Bunnymen drummer. (unless you count Damon Reece) Mike Lee wasn't that great with the Bunnymen. he just didn't fit. sorry he died so young tho.

Evergreen is the last album where something stood out besides Mac's voice and Will's guitar.

Pete never really fit into the group as well.

Drummers are a weird bunch.

I think Red just means his drumming style not his personality

i meant both, actually. he just looked way out of place up there...and he was way too animated with his 'rocking out' for my liking. it's okay to do that with people like Page and Plant, etc., but not with the Bunnymen. don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to belittle the guy, i met him and he was really nice, but i just didn't think he was right for the Bunnymen, that's all.

and evergreen was also the last album with Les on it, BF. ;-) (or is that CF now?)

Pete was the best drummer. The drum machine was the second best.

That's sad news, I really liked Micheal Lee he added some great energy to the bunnymen. Here is Do It Clean live video with Lee on drums, he just looks like he is having so much fun. Also I love Will's helmet.

I thought a rocker drummer was exactly what the Bunnymen needed for their second go round which is why I'm down for Michael Lee. Plus a little personality/style clash sometimes produces sparks. I would place the Simon dude at number three though.

I tried to log in for like 15 minutes not knowing I was colored francis. I thought I was banned (for what I had no idea) so I looked around and saw this fellow named colored francis had written all these great posts and about another ten minutes later realized it was me.

A shocking abuse of authority on Bri-Bri's part and I shall never forgive him for the initial hurt and confusion I experienced while frantically typing in my password wondering what I had done wrong.

That's a great video. Never seen it before. Great way to remember Michael, too.

Fuck there was so much promise in the Bunnymen back in 1997. They were all more animated back then. Wonder if a little Michael rubbed off on them.
