What was that about then?

What was that about then?

While listening to BBC Radio Five Live last night, I caught a piece about some poll covering Liverpool's finest albums. Apparantely, Ocean Rain came in at three, beating The Beatles' mighty Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I didn't catch the other artists, but the presenter then went onto interview Will Sergeant about Ocean Rain and The Beatles. Anybody know anything else about this poll as there doesn't seem to be a mention of it on the Interweb or anything on the official site/forum.

2: Revolver: Beatles
3; Ocean Rain

Sarge in usual form. 'blimey, I htought sgt peppers would have come first......'

Sgt Pepper is the most overrated album of all time and nowhere near even the best Beatles album. It may have some of Lennon/Harrisons's finest songs but McCartneys input?64,Getting Better,Fixing a hole.........I could go on.Tripe.Magical Mystery Tour gets my vote btw and then Rubber Soul for best Beatles album.

OR should be right up there.A very very influential album it is Master Luke.

I would say Revolver. Rubber Soul is another good pick.

I don't think it's the most overrated album of all time however it is overrated musically as a Beatles album. Sgt Pepper, for it's time was a brilliant record technically speaking with it's cover and recording techniques, nothing like that had ever been done, but musically I'll take the White Album or Rubber Soul and Revolver any day.

JackT wrote the cutest review of the White Album at amazon.com if anyone is interested.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

Too Big to Review. 5 stars? 11? 100? Whatever., December 30, 2004

Hey look at me! I'm writing a review for The Beatles' "Revolver"! After this, I'm going to review the Atlantic Ocean and St. Peter's Basillica.

Let's get serious: this musical work is too large, too ingrained in our culture to be rated in a useful way. This record is "great" in an objective sense; it is pervasive and persistant in its influence.

Have you ever heard the question, "What's the Greatest Rock Band Ever, NOT COUNTING THE BEATLES"? I have. This question illustrates the problem with rating the transcendantly great; the rating systems is devised to handle the normal range of art from very good to very bad. There simply is not enough dynamic range to fit the extreme outlier into the system. If the Beatle's get 5 stars, then who else can you give that rating to?

You already know all about "Revolver", my personal favorite Beatle's album. For any other band, this could be a Greatest Hits, but it was just one of the Beatle's best offerings. "Eleanor Rigby" and "Tomorrow Never Knows" on one album? Are you kidding me?

I dunno, I prefer Sgt. Pepper's to the White Album. Is the White Album highly regarded? If so, I'd say it's definitely overrated, IMO. I think that album shows why double albums are just a bad idea. Most of the songs don't go together, just a jumbled mess. Maybe that's the charm? I dunno, not my cup of tea. There are some good songs on it of course.

Only three apostrophe mistakes is a record Peter has never come close to matching.

Also in my defense I was little more than a child when I wrote that.
