There's nothing wrong with success but I agree late career sound changes to fit public tastes only benefitted Madonna and even she has worn out her welcome (thank God). It was no secret Joey Ramone desperately wanted pop success but that never got in the way of the Ramones changing music like few bands before.

If the Bunnymen are now making music purely in search of commercial success I think it's a bit sad and pathetic really, my favourite band are now looking faintly ridiculous. I wish they'd just pack it in to be honest, Will can do his DJ thing and play with his mates occasionally and Mac can appear at pizza joints around the country.

I don't know about packing it in. They still have their moments of brilliance.

My wife wants to know who the loser with 4000 + posts is and why he takes the Bunnymen so goddamned seriously.

But they do want pop music "performed by two guys in there 50s who there parents might have heard of."

How fucked up is that?

Nick Cave does alright, as does Tom Waits etc etc...

I really don't think that original post is good business strategy, but fair play I hope they get success.

What gets me is the amount of young bands who name-check the Bunnymen's first 4 LPs in their interviews with us/off record over a pint. Nearly every one.

I'd say the only thing of real value these days is having a decent musical legacy. If you squander that you're flucked.

I agree, I'd love to see the Bunnymen have success, but wasn't it always about doing it "on their terms"? I think that's what Ian used to say in the 80's. Doesn't look like that's the case now.

I think the real irony with the approach the Bunnymen (Ian) are taking now is that approach would've actually worked better in the early 80's, because now alternative music and all the different sub-genres have been embraced by a much larger audience, especially with digital music, internet, etc. It's been like that for years.

Maybe I'm the one that's misguided but it seems to me that if the Bunnymen went back to their "F the world" approach they had in the 80's and just focused on making awesome albums that THEY liked, with the trademark Bunny magic they would have much more success in today's music scene than the approach they're taking now. You can't tell me that Will is exactly happy with this kind of stuff, maybe he doesn't care.

Again, not saying The Fountain won't be awesome, but if this is the approach they're taking from here on out, expect diminshing returns (I guess you argue that's already the case).

I think this is where we disagree with management. We think success could be had by making a Bunnymen album on their own terms and management seem to be of the mind that they need to make concessions to public taste to find success. Maybe they're right. I hope the Fountain is successful and I hope Mac and Will are happy with it.

I still want that rock album they were supposed to after the grey album and yes Jack I am aware of Candleland.
