I still think Rust is a great song

I can feel the stars shooting through my heart like rain
Leaving on the scars where the pleasure turns to pain
Point me in a light
Bright and shiny in right direction
And then take me home again

I know the lines are showing
I can't keep them in
Like everybody's story
It's written on the skin

There's no mystery any more though, bar the odd track here and there they've just been a standard rock band since Evergreen.

Well there's no mystery to the setlist!

Here's my take on a Fountain song

Together

You climbed down
i climbed up
we climbed together
we climbed together

yeah yeah yeah do do do da da do do

words for pleasure
words for excuses
words for tomorrow
words for today

who is it? Me
why is it? Me
what is it? me
where is it? me
when is it me?
how is it me?

me me me me me me me me me me me me

Repeat song x2

What If We Are?

Postby redgumball » Sat Feb 15, 2014 12:14 am

I can't believe there is a Fountain appreciation thread. It's the one Bunnymen album I don't own. Never will. It's a common repetitive theme:

1). Band cuts one decent track
2). Band promotes it during oldies tour. 2 new songs 8 old ones.
3). Band decides it's time to pay their taxes. Grunts out an album.
4). Band fills album with 8 shite songs. 1 good one. 1 sappy ballad
5). Ballad tries to capture magic of Nothing Last Forever + Ocean Rain - but fail. (Idolness of Gods, What If We Are, What Are You Going to Do with Your Life?)
6). Band claims it's the best thing they've ever done.
7). Band uses lead guitarist and true artist - as towel boy, session bitch
8). Band dusts off Over Coats, stories from 1982-1985, shuffles out on Festival Circuit.
9). Band kicks in toilet doors.
10). Old Band doesn't want to attempt new tricks. Silently count 1,5,10's they collect.

WTF is Drivetime and Proxy?? Forchristsakes. Probably the lowest the Bunnymen have been. At least WAYGDWYL had a few good songs. I consider one song "I Think I Need It Too" as the one lone standout.

Now if they could simply string together 5-6 more of songs like that -- they might have a true album on their hands.

I hear Youth (The Verve, Embrace, etc) produced the new album (Was Jesus Jones, Stereolab, Robbie Williams not available?). And why doesn't he go by Martin Glover?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Glover

Going by YOuths production credit list - is like staring into mediocrity. Reeks of 90's rock. He's been nipping at the tit of Erasure, The Art of Noise, Dido, and PM Dawn. GAWD! I never thought I'd associate those bands with the likes of the Bunnymen.

The best thing they could do it shelve the "Garden of Meedin" album. Time to move to the next one and maybe release this stinker at a later date. Could be the Bunnymen's Zooropa.

The 'Fountain appreciation society' thing is sarcasm. Of course we don't actually like it. For me there hasn't been a good album since ocean rain. The sheer brilliance of the first four albums, and their good live performances, is the reason I, and I think most on here, keep this bunnymen thing going. And we live in hope that the next album might be a proper bunnymen record.

I lost my hope when Will admitted he's just a hired hand on all the recent albums. But if Mac can hold up a good enough album on his own, props to him, then.

mr brian, just to flog a horse that may or may not be dead, this forum deffo needs a like button - even if its ony for RGBs post. as my daughter would say, coolies. I think thats what she says anyway.

Only thing I would add, waygtdwyl I hitnk is a really good album, real slow burner and even thugh will is a bit part player his little bits are what makes it great. fountain? largely shite but his trilling little riff on shroud of turin is practically genius.

Fat cherry - I am re-listening to Shroud of Turin then. Only cause you suggested it. Able to give a fair shake.

I have not posted in a long time due to the fact I came down with some water borne illness in my ears after listening to the Fountain.

However today I was taking my son on a long drive and he selected the Fountain to listen too. To my suprise I thought it was not too bad -- there are two or three absolute dog turd songs on it (the ones with the words down in them) -- but some of the songs are not bad they just need a sprinkle of wierdness in them rather than the sprinkle of suggary fairy dust they got ..

Shroud of Turin is still the best track

Drivetime would have been good if not for the awful lyric "DRIVETIME" in it .. Does MAC no know that signing aobur caris is akin to middle of the road songs (no pun intended)

PROXY is POXY

I thnik I need it too could have been a classic if the chorus was not the same words over and over and over

if I coud get the opportunity to rework any of the songs then life of a thousand crimes could also be a classic

For me Forgotten Fields is by far the best song on the album, it's too bad more of the album wasn't like that. Even the lyrics are pretty good on it. Shroud of Turin has some really cool guitar work on it. Really the whole album has some really good guitar on it but it's ruined by unimaginative arrangements, lyrics and constant Mac backing vocals that will assuredly turn off anyone under 30 from listening further.

Like I said when it first came out.... Forgotten Fields, Idolness of Gods, TINIT, Drivetime are great...

Think I Need it too was a bit over produced imho

The Fountain is good but much much better stripped down to just Mac and guitar...

Cannot make up my mind if Shroud is genius or rubbish...

Don't like the other songs much....

November should have been included instead of Proxy....
Even god has to soundcheck sometimes
