So I'm not sure I can do the exhibit justice with my review, but I'll try!
The exhibit opened on Friday at 7pm, and as I had gotten down to LA the night before, I had some time on Friday to head to lunch with black francis, in_bluer_skies, and Rusty. It was so nice to meet in_bluer_skies and Rusty for the first time! We had a great lunch.
I got to the exhibit right around 7pm, and although parking was a little tough, I got something that wasn't too far away. There was already a small crowd milling about outside the gallery, which was a good sign! As black francis said, we got in and were on the VIP list, so we got armbands, and of course I saved mine! Beer and wine were free-flowing and complimentary, and the husband and wife team responsible for the spirits were lovely people!
As the gallery wasn't quite filled up, I had the chance to peruse the art on the walls. Substrate isn't a giant place, and I estimate that about 30-40 pieces were on display. It's quite striking how much more the art will jump out at you when you see originals as compared with seeing digital reproductions online of the work. I think that the curator and Will did a good job arranging the pieces on the walls without overwhelming the space. Many representations of the "Vanity of Plumage" series of prints were on display, including a very large one. I have uploaded pictures of the opening weekend to FB and set the photos to public so you can see what it looked like for yourself. If you're interested, PM me and I will send you the link!
It's difficult to say which was my favorite, though one abstract piece that used a lot of red, the name of which is eluding me at the moment, really jumped out at me. The titular painting was also a standout. If I could have I would have gotten them all!
As the night wore on, the place got more and more crowded, pretty much until it was PACKED. Even Moby made an appearance! I started stepping outside to get some air, it was so warm. I would say it was a rocking party! I did have the pleasure of being introduced to Will (thanks in_bluer_skies!), and we had a really nice conversation. He was just so wonderful and kind and cared about what I had to say. He did relate to black francis and me the story of the "Vanity of Plumage" series of works, which I won't repeat here--it's not the same if Will isn't telling it! And as bf said, Will was very generous with his time and we excused ourselves because we knew other people wanted to chat with him as well!
Finally, when I really couldn't stand in my stilettos anymore (yes, I'm a wimp), I said my goodbyes to Will and told him how much I appreciated his work. He gave me a hug, which was awesome. He asked me if I was coming back on Saturday, and of course I said I was, and I was planning on it anyway!
So... Saturday. I arrived a little after 2pm, dressing a little more casually than the night before with more forgiving heels. It was amazing how natural sunlight changed the entire look of all the pieces, as contrasted to the artificial track lighting of the evening before. The colors on several of the abstract pieces were more vibrant and were even more striking in the natural light! The gallery was much, much less crowded than the night before, so I was able to snap some photos of the layout in the gallery. Beer and wine were free-flowing once again, but I limited myself to a glass of champagne since I had had a headache from all the beer the night before.
I met some fabulous people, including a few zany characters, and had one of the best weekends of my life. If you are going to be in the Los Angeles area from now until June 16, I strongly urge that you try to go in and have a look around--you won't regret it.
I'm almost positive I'm forgetting to say stuff, so if you have questions, ask! :-)
