The press was excited, music fans outside of their cult were interested. It seemed anything was possible. Normally when bands reform there is a lot eye rolling and winks but not so with the Bunnymen. It felt right. But then they released Evergreen which I tried to love but it seemed too polite after Burned and we all know about the series of missteps since then. Siberia is probably my favorite post 97 album and if the Fountain were a Mac solo album in name as it is in deed I would enjoy it more.

I remember being excited as well for Evergreen and then trying hard to like it. There are a couple classics on it, but that's about it for me.

They did kick ass on the Evergreen tour, best show I've ever been to probably. I also saw Electrafixion a couple years earlier and they sounded better live than on record.

I didn't want to start another thread for this but here's a pretty scathing review of the Fountain that I saw on the official forum. I hate to say it but I agree with most of it, even with all the typos. If they make another album I hope Ian reads it beforehand. Here's an excerpt that I found pretty interesting and it's basically what I and others have been saying.

"To some extent, you can’t blame the Bunnymen for that. Siberia was an embarrassing commercial flop, failing to make the Top 75 in the UK, where the band was once a Top 20 staple. At such a point, though, an established band can take a couple different paths. It can accept it’s no longer a record-selling force and record whatever the hell it wants, knowing it still has a receptive, if small, core fan base and will sell plenty of tickets to shows. Or it can do whatever it feels is necessary to scrape back some sales, airplay, and commercial clout. Echo & the Bunnymen have clearly taken the latter route, and The Fountain is full of songs that are perfectly listenable, apart from that voice, and also fairly generic."

It wouldn't make any difference if he did, Mac's ego will brook no admission of falibility - he's Ian McCulloch, how could he possibly be wrong, after all he's writing and singing better than ever isn't he. ISN'T HE!!

You're probably right, I think I'm being just as delusional as Ian is if I think he'd actually take some criticism and change for the better.

I read the Pop Matters review last week and I wanted to post the comment of "You Suck" but I couldn't be bothered to figure out how.

Some of the points the reviewer makes are valid, while others are over the top.

I don't understand why people get so worked up over this band. If they/he doesn't do it for you anymore, MOVE ALONG!

(Maybe it's an age thing. You folks in your 30s and 40s are still idealistic enough to think stuff matters. After 50, if you don't wake up 3 times a night to pee or get more than 5 hours of sleep, life is good.)

What points did the reviewer make that were over the top concerning the album? I don't agree with what he said about the Bunnymen in general, but I thought his critique of the album was pretty spot on for the most part.

Also, what gives you the right to tell people not to basically post about the Bunnymen if it's in a negative fashion? We're obviously all fans of the band, some of us simply aren't big fans of the new stuff (and for good reason). I liked Siberia, Fountain has a few songs I like but overall it's pretty mediocre and forgettable.

I think what's frustrating for some people like myself is the Bunnymen are capable of so much more, even at their age. Just listen to Will's solo stuff for proof of that.

Absolutely, Woj. If i want to piss it in the fountain, that's my matter. Well said.

I confess I've already pissed it in the fountain. The U.S. distributor is Redeye, the same folks who brought us the re-released non-sanctioned Shepherd's Bush cd.
