Echo & The Bunnymen

What is your most memorable summer festival show, either as a fan or performer?
Ian McCulloch: I’ve never been to a festival, unless we’ve played. I don’t like crowds much. I’m quite shy. But one of the best things I can remember is when I saw Ron Sexsmith in a tent at T in the Park six years ago. His voice was brilliant. I also saw James Brown three months before he died. It was a mad bill with Hot Chocolate.

Wow, I love Hot Chocolate. They still play?
I think [frontman] Errol Brown did his last show in Liverpool a year or so ago.

Girl Talk uses a great Hot Chocolate sample on his latest album. Do you know Girl Talk?
No, I don’t think so. Hot Chocolate was unbelievable. If they would have been American, they would have been considered one of the best.

Based on those pics I would anything never to see Coldplay live.
With the Force as his ally he did battle with the Dark Lord. And he showed the measure of a true Jedi at a place called "The Death Star" where hope for the Galaxy was reborn. May all who struggle against tyranny hold his memory in their hearts

I don't get with Chris Martin and his pals with those costumes. Are they trying to look like they are out of the French Revolution to go with the cover of Viva La Vida? Is that what happens when you become a product rather than a band? That you start looking like a load of tramps with stitched together clothes that look like they were made up at home by your mum? Look, Chris Martin is even wearing a piece of string round his waist to hold his trousers up.

What horrible covers! That does not do justice to Billie Jean at all! Coldplay are going to be here in Raleigh Thursday night - I won't be attending.

According to an interview with Ian on the Sept. Q, Chris Martin does not appear on the new album. (I know -- cause for celebration.)

Does anybody want to tell these folks? Or should we just let them buy the album and boost sales?

Chinese whispers eh? I thought that the new album includes a co-penned Chris Martin song, which many people on here thought was probably some leftover from Slideling. Suddenly, it's changed to Chris Martin appearing on the album.

We shouldn't bother telling the folks, but the appearance of Martin and Buckland on Slideling didn't exactly do much for that album, so.

Yeah, don't tell them a thing! So I forwarded that link from APW to my co-worker so we could get some laughs from the Coldplay cover songs and I just listened to Billie Jean in its entirety this time. Boy did he butcher that song! It really is terrible! He should not have tried to hit those high notes!

APW was a decent performance. I thought the band played well, and it sounded good - especially for an outdoor event (not in a venue). Mac's voice sounded great, and the band are awesome together. They are also really nice guys and get on well with each other... i hope the lineup stays the same for a long time... They did get a new guy named Arnie on keyboards. Paul (Baltic Fleet) is done with the band for now, he got a job and has a baby on the way, so he won't be touring anymore (at least that's what I heard).

There were some fans in the crowd, among all the young people... Pam (Rusty) told me she was talking to some people who had been at the Radio City gig and others who were happy to see that the Bunnymen were "back". (i didn't think they left LOL).

All the mud and grossness made it seem like a real UK festival... luckily we purchased some rain boots before going. These magazine reviews are just fluff. It was a good show, and I'm not just saying that cuz I am a big fan... it was good, and the crowd seemed into it. Even "Think I Need It Too" sounded really good live... Will really lets the guitar go on that one. I'm liking it more and more... and looking forward to the new album.

By the time they reached what is known as the Holy Trinity of "The Back of Love," "Killing Moon," and "The Cutter," Echo & The Bunnymen has already unquestionably played the best set of the 3 day festival. Unfamiliar with the British legends, the legion of young Coldplay fans were growing restless until the opening notes of "Killing Moon" sent a shockwave of familiarity throughout the huge crowd. Immediately, the entire crowd is riding a massive high.

It has never made any sense to me why Echo & The Bunnymen weren't bigger in the states. "Ocean Rain" and "Porcupine" are 2 of the most perfect albums ever written, and their influence over modern bands like Arcade Fire and The Editors has never gotten proper respect. "Killing Moon" might get all the attention thanks to "Donnie Darko" but "Thorn of Crowns" and covers of The Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" and Lou Reed's "Walk On the Wild Side" were the brightest moments during a weekend characterized by mud.

It's one of my favorite Bunnymen songs but it usually sucks live from what I've heard (maybe all the keyboards/synths in the recorded version). I really like what the drummer does on this version.

Tequila flows through my veins.

I just finished listening to the August 2, 2009 show and loved every minute of it.

Regardless of what I may have said in the past, Ian's voice sounded great.

I closed my eyes and remembered it all.
