Brixton review 9-12-10

Ahh what a night,what a gig!..Excellent...My £27.50 Ticket and i asked 6 different pals to come along none could be bothered to venture south,and some live in the south!..The bouncers/security were even telling people no smoking outside the venue i had a little cigar and escaped the telling off,then they made females go in one door and males thru another door,no not that one this one`i should of worn a dress that would of confused `em`..worse to come queuing now inside the venue waiting to be searched,the chap in fron of me was made to spit out his gum and throw away his packet of gum,the bouncer said`it costs us thousands a year to clear it up`...why not take our laces and belts to?...i caught up with the chap and gave him one of my tridents dont ask me how i escaped the vigorous search i felt like i broke the law...`i fought the law and ...i won`..£4.05 for a pint!..and i`m ready now and 9.07 The gregorian chant has begun or is it just for the bouncers to get in position with there torches to see if there is any cunning jaw movements in the crowd?...MY highlight of crocodiles was probably `happy death men`but none were bad at least the academy still has good acoustics if nothing else..Ian made a few comments about the students in london,never saw his face once just a silhouette for the whole show will also seemed in top notch....heaven up here it was a pleasure not one of ians favourites...my i have a soft spot for the promise and after seeing the you tube clip for no dark things it didnt disappoint over the wall was also breathtaking....a quick 8 minute interval then `the bit that i like most`says ian the extended brilliant lips like sugar,perfect dancing horses....the best song ever written band starts with nothing lasts forever ian says no not that one.then they break into the killing moon..and finish with a storming cutter which had the whole crowd going crazy and the show finished dead on 11.00...so 25 tracks in total.....my next wish please porcupine which i think is even better............all OPINIONS my own thank you............great to hear all these early tracks live anyway...

Just got back. Excellent performance; sounded so much better live - probably the best Bunnymen gig I have been to in 13 years, and much better than the Ocean Rain ones. I think A Promise, HUH and Turquoise Days were the highlights for me. Good to see a wide variety of people attending a Bunnymen gig again, including the what the kids want-type people and students (Mac had a downer on students though??). That will be my last though, I swear....

Missed Kelley Stoltz's set though, other than the last track, due to delays on the Victoria line. Bit gutted about that.

Another brilliant night, loved every minute, my best were All That Jazz, With a Hip & HUH. Took my 13 year old daughter along and she was leaping around in her new DMs! Wish I was going to Liverpool at the weekend.

fantatsic night,loved the camo look,the voice was spot on,great to hear both albums back to back.probably wont hear most of those records live ever again huh the atmospheric album ever made
loved the venue as well and managed to get home before 1:00

another top night. only just got in in time for the chants, well, after fighting my way to the bar for a shandy and a glass of chardonay for mrs FC. She, a relative novice to the cause, thought it was better than oxford, i.e., that you could occasionally see the band, and the set, plus the smoke was more atmospheric in its bursts of activity than the swamp we had in oxford. And when mac said that about 'this being his favourite bit', didn't he say something about pork scratchings, liking the bit on the outside, but not the bit in the middle. So not HUH then I guess. Anyway she said she agreed with that. I looked on, like you do a small child who just doesn't understand yet, and explained that after ten years or so its brilliance will shine through. Had to leave after lips to ensure getting the last train home. Naturally it was one of those ones where the seats are just that bit too small and the carriage smells of wee, but even that couldn't dampen the night. good one. last one ever....... , good one gogp

Well, I said previously that I'd decided previously that would be last one as I haven't bothered with the normal tours since 2003 - hence partly why I had no desire to see the encore. Thing is, I don't think it can get any better than that. Even the dry ice looked spectacular with it every so often appearing as a giant mushroom cloud behind the silhouetted profiles of the band. Kind of like an explosion.

With the benefit of the next morning, I would go again, but only if it was the same gig. Maybe if they do the same Crocs/HUH tour next year in Europe...

By the way, what was with that body security checks done at that venue. Never had that done before going to a gig.

perhaps they are worried that theres been a surge in radicalisation of middle aged blokes with beer bellies, or just that with a couple of £4/pint lagers inside us, well who knows what we might do if we had a sharp instrument within easy reach - like when the big bloke who always seems to stand next to me starts singing loud and dancing, and rather worryingly knows all the words to going up, i.e., just having a good time, and why not but why doesn't he just BOG OFF AND DO IT NEXT TO SOMEONE ELSE I DIDN'T PAY 27 QUID FOR YOU TO DO THAT I LIKE STANDING HERE TAPPING MY FOOT GENTLY IN TIME etc. Or maybe its just not PC, espcially in Brixton to only give a full body search to young asian men either carrying rucksacks or appear somewhat bulked up underneath their parkas. Mrs FC said she was kind of afronted she only had her bag searched and didn't get the full fumble other ladies seemed to undergo. I suggested it was the air of authority she carries so well. Works for me at any rate. Or maybe its the drugs, and only their mates are allowed to take them inside to sell tio the punters.

Agree with everything you say about the gig ghostie, and I have the same, well that'll do response, but no doubt, next time theres a tour I'll get the itch and curiosity will get the better of me. Always does.

this tour is going to be a hard act to follow,the encore did seem a bit pointless but it didnt stop me jumping around!
this tour should serve as an inspiration to freshen up the set lists for future gigs,

oh and another thing the varying smoke levels let me see was the keyboard player joining in on the drums during the wig out at the end of happy death men. And speaking of drums, obviously I'm a member of the pete defreitas was the last great drummer on earth club but the bloke doing the duties was spot on too, as were the rest of the band. Bloke singing did alright too.

I really enjoyed that. I was on the left side of the stage and it took a while for the crowd to get revved up. I'm only a whipper snapper of 41 but the average Bunnyfan looks creakier with every gig. Not as energetic as Kilburn '85 lets put it that way.
That was my dream gig from about the age of 15 and now I've only got a Stones club gig left on my band bucket list.
Wished they'd played Puppet and Do it Clean but I like the revamped Lips like Sugar in the encore. Didnt hang around for the rest as they've been done to death for me.
One gripe was £4.30 for a pint - The Academy never used to be that extortionate. Having said that had to wait until A Promise for Beer/Bog break. All killer no filler.

Keys plays drums during Happy Death Men ending-cf Glos review when I had a good view(less smoke than Brum)

Only downer is Mac saying the encore is his favourite bit!Get the message big man...these are our fave gigs since the 80's.Please do not go back to the GH setlist!

i got in just as it started - id been watching snooker - well no balls but lots of pockets and net

once inside brixton academy is a great venue

since we hear a lot of crocodiles in normal sets the contrasts of the tracks they dont do was refreshing to say the least

but although huh is more moody and full of atmospheric quirks and idiosyncratic lyrics mac acknowledged some parts were difficult for him to sing particularly innocent pleasures

i got a bit fed up with thank yao after most tracks but he was definitely on form and a bit mellower with the london audience

it was a celebration of ancient art which as most i prefer to move on from now

zimbo and withahip were great i thought though on a lot of stuff i didnt really hear the bass which is surely crucial to the huh sound

all in all for 1hr 45mins it was good value and definitely a one off

and yes i wonder how the new setlist will fall out of these gigs

anyway hope yall enjoy the rest of the shows

I was tempted to sing along, but I decided not to. Had a little daddy dance (or sway is probably a more accurate decision) as I'm fast approaching the age of joining that esteemed club. Stood in the vicinity of the mixing/sound desk as I decided it would be better to get an overall view and listen to the songs. A handful of people dancing round there - some in their twenties as well, some people annoyingly chatting, so I had to tap my foot in time with the percussion as I felt some obligation to show I knew who this band are for those that thought it was a night out with a bit of live music and a chance to catch up with mates and arrange their social lives for new year's eve. But I really felt telling the chatting lot to shut the fuck up.
